Toughman Contest

At the beggining of January I will be fighting in my first toughman contest, I have been lifting weights and running nearly every other day, I have been sparring with buddies and really kicking some ass lately, but I kind of wear out easy and become kind of slow with my punches, " My arms start to feel like they are burning out".
I was just wondering if someone with a little boxing experience could help me out with getting my speed and endurance up.
What are some things boxers do to train?

Any advice will be helpfull since I am a very amature Boxer and no nearly nothing about boxing or how to train for a match.

Toughman contests are usually 1 or 2 minute rounds. Get yourself a good timer and work the heavybag and the speed bag in two minute rounds. Start out with 3 rounds and work yourself up to whatever the distance(#of rounds) you need to go. As far as road work don't kill yourself trying to run 5 miles a day, this is bullshit. Do the same thing with the timer run as hard as you can for 2 minutes, walk for 1 minute, again do this untill you can go the distance. As far as sparring, unless your friends are boxers sparring with them is useless. If you can go to a PAL or local boxing gym find a good sparring partner there and spar in a controlled enviorment. Sounds like you need to focus on your strength-endurance.A few things that worked for me was to substitute lots of wind sprints (with short rest intervals in between) in place of distance running.Sprinting simulates the pace of a fight better than a long distance jog.Another thing was heavy bag work.I would do a drill that focused entirely on straight punching(jabs,crosses) against a heavy bag.I would throw a series of 6-8 straight punches(right,left,right,left,etc.) as fast as I could, then throw jabs at a slower pace for about 20 seconds, then repeat.Kind of like interval training.Fast pace for a bit followed by longer, slower pace.This really increased my shoulder and punching endurance.Also, you said that you lift every other day.How much work are you doing for your pressing muscles(chest,delts,tris)?If I was training for boxing and implementing benches or militaries, my punching speed and endurance suffered quite a bit.Then I learned to cut back or eliminate pressing exercises and my endurance shot up.Just a suggestion.Good luck with the toughman bro.

Bigsatan's right about a couple things. If you're big, the fight will be be short, so train for such. Don't train with your buddies. Go to a gym for a month or so and you should be able to develop at least a few things at an instinctive level that you could use. Train with the biggest, fastest guy at that gym if you can. Since he only has a month or so left to train, would he be better served by sparring in the ring mostly? If he doesn't have the gas to go the distance perhaps he should concentrate on defense and let the other toughguy punch himself out. He could train to wrap his opponents arms up in a clinch then sneak in uppercuts.

I'm not a boxer myself, but the guys I've seen in the few Toughman's I've watched don't seem particularly ring savvy. Do any trainned boxers know tricks that beginners always seem to fall for?
