The truth about protein...

socket

New member
Ok guys, looking to bury some myths, and get some truths.

1. Is there a saturation point, whereby if you ingest more than this, it's wasted?
2. Is commercially available protein (for shakes) massively different in bio-availability, brand to brand, or is protein just protein?
3. How much of your daily intake of protein is via drinks? (percentage please)
4. How much should you take in one sitting? and how regular? (every 1, 2 or how many hours?)

I hope some of the biologists jump in on this one, if there are any other questions you guys have about protein, feel free to jump in.

My answers
1) I dont believe there is a saturation point, i do however believe that there ismaximum amount which will be of benefit to you and this is determined by your amount of muscle mass (not body weight), and other factors such as amount of training, amount of muscle damage, amount of circulating growth factors and androgens etc. Although i am a Exercise Scientis i do not believe in the 2.2g /kg of bodyweight crap. I believe if these studies were done properly and the equation was calculated using muscle mass and not body weight, it might even be scientifically justified to ingest 600-800g of protein/day if you are Ronnie Coleman.
2) with regards to whey protein; Isolate is Isolate and it is obviously superior to concentrate, but i dont believe that there is a significant diffrence between isolates, or concentrates for that matter. The biggest diffrence is advertisement. I personally like any whey with a bit of hydrolysate and lots of isolate.
3)Personally i only have 3 out of 8 "meals" as shakes. Pre Workout, Postworkout and 01h00am (3 hours into my sleep). Therefore 150g out of 400g - 37.5%
4) I normally ingest 50g of protein no more than 2.5 hours apart during the day. Post-Workout shake and next meal normally 45min apart.

Well, if you can find a manufacturer of protein it's that much better, I buy 2- 50lbs bags at a time from a manufacturer I found in Canada (that's their minimum order) but it's lasts me a year and it comes to $650 for isolate or $400 for 80% agglomerated for the 2 bags, so you save a ton of cash and they let you know exactly what's in it.

So I imagine a lot of retailers buy large amounts from the same manufacturers and just package it and put their own labels on it and charge us out the ass for the fancy packaging that is useless.

sorry for the rant, but I'm a cheep fuck that knows when I'm getting ripped off, I couldn't afford to buy it retail, damn.

I drink 4 shakes and 3 meals a day, morning, before/after workout and keep one beside the bed to sip on a night,lol..

If you're eating protein from food sources, excess protein will simply be converted to glycogen and used as fuel. If you're drinking protein powder and take too much at any one time, the body will not have time to process the excess and it will be excreted in your urine.

40 to 50 mgs per dose is the maximum that the body can take in and use at one time. I think that is why most manufacturers have two scoops set at 35 to 50 mg of protein per serving. I have 3 shakes daily and have 3 to 4 smaller meals, chicken and salmon and white rice. Pretty boring but it gets me about 300 mg daily of protein and I weigh about 190

You kind of contradict yourself here with the first answer. You speak about 600-800mg of protein being scientifically justified for Ronnie Coleman. He weighs about 300+ on off season which makes it right to assume that he's taking in anywhere from 600-800mg of protein per day.

Scientific literature states that the maxmum amount is 2.2g per kg of bodyweight. That is 1g per pound. If Ronnie weighs 300 pounds Scientific literature says he should only consume 300g of pretein per day. We all know this will be way too little for the big man.

i thought it was 2g/pound, not per kilo?
