Thanks to everyone who has posted on how to bench correctly/safely. After more than a year (probably much longer) or trying to bench bodybuilding style (elbows out, etc.), finally caught on and adjusted my style. My God does it make every bit of difference in my shoulders! I was so stoked when I tried it a couple weeks back.

Also, thanks to needsize for introducing me to the 5x5 idea. I'm actually doing a 4x5 routine that best fits into some things I like to do. It feels great and is quite a bit different from my old reliable pyramid style. Thank you man!

5x5's rock. i started them a couple months back at the beginning of cutting (when i was still strong..sniff) i like it. you notice the real bad fatigue/difficult reps coming later and later in the sets which means progress.

as for the benching thread, i'll be the first to admit that i learned quite a bit about the PL way of benching and will now seek out more info on the correct form. more or less for my own self interest. i may not teach average suzy client to do it but i may modify her bench press to one of a closer arm position to the body. i did it this morning with one of my clients. i told him he had some options when benching and showed him how to change the angle of his arms from a "pec bench" to where his arms were closer to his sides, just by lowering the position of the bar on his torso or bringing his hands in. he thought it was cool.

any chance i get now, i go over to a flat bench and try to set up high on the bench, shoulder blades pinched, glutes tight etc. lift off, lower to my upper abs,...its the flaring out the lats that i am still having trouble with. even the leg drive isnt a problem (unless im wearing my warmup pants...then ZIP...up the bench i go. LOL)

ah well, im off to nap. gotta absorb carbs

peace.

If you can learn how to bench using a powerlifter's technique your benching career will go much further and your gains will be significant. It will not detract from your chest size. Keep at it!

Great job man...

Now add some board presses. When doing them yesterday I was noticing how pumped my chest was getting from them. Odd...but they feel great!!! They also build the bench press and the triceps...

In powerlifting the bar touches the chest and goes to a lower part of the chest.

I`m currently doing an extremely low volume push pull legs split.....

for instance... push is only 5 working sets and 1 warm up.

fucking rediculous. but ive been breaking PRs on it like every workout for some weeks now
