squating and growth

I've had chronic back pain/injury (sports injuries combined with overtraining) but recently been trying to squat. Unfortunately my back only feels worse, its the limiting factor (my legs aren't trained to failure b/c back pain).

My question - I've been doing heavy lunges and I'm wondering if anyone has had similar problems but gotten good results from the switch.

Just looking for anecdotal info, i know what the books say about lunges.

thx

I have the same problemk. make sure you do alot of abs. Your abs could be weak and causeing the pain. Also make sure you have good posture. And get a belt.

Belts don't help all that much w/ back problems (contrary to popular belief). Their strength lies in them preventing hernia during heavy lifting. The added pressure or psychological crutch may help a little but this won't be a remedy.

Try the assortment of leg pressing devices available to see if any of these lessen the back strain (be careful as some can increase the strain). As stated before lunges are also a good substitute.
