My fiance' cannot lose any weight. Why?

Breakfast: 4 slices of turkey bacon (prepared microwave) & 2 eggs (cooked in butter) on an english muffin

Approximately 4-5 hours later, lunch

Lunch: (Cold cuts on a bagel w/swiss and little mustard) or (steamed vegetables and shrimp, 1 pint) (occasionally a slice of vegetable pizza) (occasionally boneless spare ribs from chinese resturant)

Approximately 5-8 hours later, dinner

Dinner: Steak (well done) w/ vegetables (sometimes potatoes) or ground beef in spagetti sauce, etc

If we eat out for dinner she normally gets subway (wraps not sandwich) or a salad at a resturant (though it's not always the healthiest)

Occasionally snacks on triscuit

That's about all the detail that I have.

Well, needless to say, this diet is AWFUL!! Very unhealthy & low in nutrition. Have her start using a site like fiday to see how many calories she's really consuming -- it's prolly a lot based on her food choices, so that's why she's not losing weight.

She needs to eat clean, unprocessed foods, complex carbs & healthy fats.

Thank you all very much for your help. Needless to say, I'm not a nutritionist by trade. Though, as a personal trainer, I should know better. I, before hand, should have already thought of all that you said. Anyway, thanks again.

Hey, sometimes it takes another set of eyes.....

For ideas on meals, etc.....check out the "Recipe Thread!" and all of our 2005 logs -- could help get a jumpstart....

Curious as to what certification(s) do you have? Does the cert testing cover diet ? Im seriously clueless which is why I'm asking...

Bunny - PTs usually don't have a lot of nutrition knowledge ..... besides the basic "eat healthy and in moderation". It is very rare to find a PT who is well-versed in clean diet planning. Not to mention, most cert's give you very basic, broad info. Those who "specialize" usually do so with their own self-study.

Not a slam against the post-er here ..... I am a former PT who didn't know jack about diet planning for many years. Eventually, I learned, but by then, I was WAY to burnt out on training. I REALLY hate 99% of people who get trainers ... they want results yesterday without the effort, discipline or drive.

I have (HAD) certs through ACE & AFAA (PT), and have absolutely NO knowledge about dieting. They cover basic nutrition (Food Pyramid, cal to burn 1 lb...). I have learned pretty much all I know about diet from EF and husband.

I think the ladies have answered your question re: diet. The only thing I have to say is try to get her to not focus so much on the scale and the numbers.

There are other great accomplishments that come along with living this type of lifestyle. Like increase in strength. The scale may not have moved much but, her face may be thinner. Hell, she may even be experiencing less PMS symptoms from the change in her lifestyle.

There are other wonderful physical and even mental and emotional things that come from healthy eating and exercise besides decrease in weight and body fat. One huge accomplishment for me was being able to walk up one of the highest escalators in the D.C. subway system without losing my breath and feeling pain in my quads. Try to get her to notice the other great things.

I'm certified through AFTA (American Fitness Training of Athletics). I know alot about training (some through self education and some through experience) but you're right about the nutrition observation. I know the basics, enough to serve as a foundation to get started, but nothing that would facilitate the creation of a meal plan. What's worse is that I should be. For most people nutrition is every bit, if not more important, when compared to the importance of their training. Thanks again, everybody.

Hey Bunny,

Yes, the certification test did cover nutrition but only the basics. Most of the nutritional information that was covered in the text was information I already knew.
