My fiance' cannot lose any weight. Why?

My fiance' is on a quest to lose weight. I'm a personal trainer and have been training her for about a month but she hasn't shown any signs of improvement.

Several months ago she joined a gym and I trained her for 8-10 weeks. With a routine similar to what I have her on now, she began to show improvement after only 2-3 weeks. Her membership expired after three months and we didn't have the money to re-new at that time.

Now, fast forward several months, and I'm training her 3-4 days/wk, depending on her schedule, and her diet isn't bad. She's cut down on carbs severely which alone should have made a difference. However, after a month she hasn't lost a pound and doesn't look any different.

Though she's so determined that she won't quit, she does become depressed and discouraged when she either weighs herself or looks in the mirror and doesn't notice any change. I'm concerned that if she continues without any improvement, she will become increasingly discouraged and completely ruin her chances for weight loss.

Also, she went to an endo not to long ago and he informed her that her thyroid was operating within acceptable ranges. She also went for a hormone panel and that also revealed nothing.

I keep telling her to be persistant, and she is, but I'm confused as to why she hasn't shown any results and months ago under nearly identical circumstances she did. Does anybody here have any ideas or suggestions? Such would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Cheers.

Her Stats:

Age: 40
Height: 5' 4"
Weight: 244 lbs

Her Routine

Monday: Upper Body
Wednesday: Lower Body
Friday: Upper Body
Saturday: Lower Body

Cardio: 5-6 days/wk
45 min - 1 hr per session

Assitance would be much appreciated.

What exactly does she eat?? Does she track her food via an online journal like www.fitday.com??

The reason I ask about fitday, is is that I started using it and was logging everything I ate, I was very surprised to find how much I was overeating.... people have a tendency to underestimate what they eat...

What EXACTLY is she eating? I mean DETAILS ..... food choices, amounts, measurements, timing, condiments, preparation, etc.

Also, that is a silly amount of cardio to start out. SHe needs to REALLY focus on diet right now, let DIET do the work.

The diet is going to make the biggest difference for her right now. And also make sure she is consuming AT LEAST 1 - 1.5 gal of water /day. She may have a bit of inconsistency in the gym if her training is subject to her work schedule, but the diet MUST be consistent to get results. And don't just limit carbs on her - make sure she's getting enough protein and also good quality fats. At the very least she should feel a difference just in how she feels by cleaning up the diet completely.

Breakfast: 4 slices of turkey bacon (prepared microwave) & 2 eggs (cooked in butter) on an english muffin

Approximately 4-5 hours later, lunch

Lunch: (Cold cuts on a bagel w/swiss and little mustard) or (steamed vegetables and shrimp, 1 pint) (occasionally a slice of vegetable pizza) (occasionally boneless spare ribs from chinese resturant)

Approximately 5-8 hours later, dinner

Dinner: Steak (well done) w/ vegetables (sometimes potatoes) or ground beef in spagetti sauce, etc

If we eat out for dinner she normally gets subway (wraps not sandwich) or a salad at a resturant (though it's not always the healthiest)

Occasionally snacks on triscuit

That's about all the detail that I have.

Ditto what Daisy said. So she has a real grasp on what she's eating, I really recommend putting her meals into a food counts program like www.fitday.com to get a true count of calories and proportions of protein / fat / carbs. And also she will start seeing how the portion size of food relates to the cals / prot / fat / carbs in everything she eats.
