muscle weight vs fat loss

Forced Negative

New member
I started working out again after a 3 year layoff at Feb 15 2010. After a good lifting and cardio program 4x a week on April 15 I only lost 3lbs. My trainer tell me its muscle weight growth. Does anyone have a opinion, I dont believe weight loss is that slow.

Stop worrying about numbers, especially weight. What you should be looking at is FAT loss / muscle gain. It's possible you're doing a body recomp without even knowing it. You most likely did gain muscle and lost a bit of fat in the process. You did not mention your diet. do you eat like shit or relatively clean? Do you eat enough protein?

BTW, I know you didn't ask about this, but MOST trainers suck. They most likely don't know jack about much and got a bullshit certificate. Even the ones that do know what they're doing are restricted from teaching properly anyway. If you really want to see results, educate yourself and stop wasting your money. Do you squat below parallel or deadlift at all? If not, ditch your trainer. The people on this board know more than enough and will be willing to help you reach your goals.

Forget about the scale, utilize the mirror to access your improvements. ALso you trainer is right, once you start working out again you will put on weight before loosing any. Its the bodies crappy trick it plays on us. Once your body gets back into the routine the weight will drop off better. Also what does your diet look like, that could be part of the problem.

I know my diet is not perfect but pretty lean in my opinion. I have the staples: oatmeal, eggs, whey protein, fish, lean beef, sweet potatoes, loins and round. Haven't got into creatine just yet besides the few grams in my whey. I'm 39 now so test boosters will be coming later. I will go hiit on my cardio this week and go from 4 to 5x a week, hope my wife lets me. The trainer was free for new members, and you're right, I knew just as much as he did, and I nobody believes i'm at 30% bodyfat like their fat scanner says. It's nice to be back in the gym, on the boards, it still amuses me when I see improper form and meatheads slamming weights around. Some things will never change.

Most of us don't even use scales (unless for competition stats). I couldn't care less what my weight is, as long as the body fat is at the level I want. My weight has been basically the same; give or take 10 lbs, whether I was out-of-shape with a belly, or as I am now, 6-pack and 5% bf.

Just keep up the work, and watch the fat content in your diet, and don't worry about the scales.

Agreed with everybody. Muscle weighs more than fat, so even if you're burning fat, if you're gaining muscle your weight isn't necessarily going to go down.

And there's several ways to find out your body comp and bf%. Get a different measurement. Machines in gyms that are used often aren't always accurate.
