Help... Calf raises causing back pain

Zyglamail said:
Seateds are ok, but I dont feel they hit the calf quite as well as the standing calf raise, just my opinion though.

True... seated tend to work the Soleous(sp?) more than the Gastrocnemius (again sp?)

Thanks for all of the quick replies everyone.

I will try substituting the leg press machine and/or hack squat and standing with a DB for the standing calf raises and hit the seated raises even harder. Just seems that my calves respond much quicker than everything else, which seems a bit odd.

Citruscide, I read the same thing about the different muscles that the seated vs standing hit, so agree to keep doing both, although on different equipment.

b fold, LOL, yeah, my genetics gave me good teeth and strong calves compared to everything else, I'm making gains elsewhere but my upper body is still pretty weak although I am hitting it harder. Sadly amusing that my chest measurement has gone from 40 to 38.5 due to losing some weight, but at least my pecs are starting to get a little definition under the fat that is still there... I will also start working my back harder too, but when it first got sore I had to do my back extensions with body weight only since even a 25 lb weight hurt (and not in a good way ;)

Another option is first to do some sets of calve raises with one leg at the time. Reduces the overall weight you can use ---> strain on the back , but still damn effective at making those calves hurt.
