its depressing, it really is. i cant wait to squat again. i dont know if i should try speed bench this sunday or not. i tried making a reverse hyper out of a stretch cord thing, a dumbbell, a huge chest freezer, and a couch cushion. all that really happened was some pain came back from having to jump onto the freezer. the damn thing didnt even work. did i mention that this sucks?

i think i'm done whining

you dont HAVE to do reverse hypers. you can do sldl or romanian deadlifts. also you can do high rep partial deadlifts and back extensions.

i don't have a reverse hyper YET.

i was doing a mass/strength program (yeah yeah, i know, mass=blasphemy). every week was 2 deadlifting sessions(work up to a max set of 20) and a squat workout inbetween each. well i probably got overtrained or something and i was using bad form, at least i think i was. i heard my back pop for 5 reps then stopped. then i took the next week off but i had to work construction, so that aggravated it pretty bad.

some days it doesnt hurt at all and some days it hurts even when i'm laying down. but it has gotten better so it's probably not a totally ruptured disc, maybe just bulging.

today i had to push on a tree while somebody cut it so it didnt fall the wrong way. the pain is always in one place, like a small circular area so, again, it seems like a bulging disc. the past week i've been doing 3-4 sets of 20-25 rep deads with like 17 pounds and i was thinking i'd move up in weight every week.

i have no idea anymore. i just wanna squat and stuff again

yeah..something similar happened to cubanito but he never said in that old thread if it got 100% better or how long it took..it'd be nice to know.

oh yeah, did i mention my family doesnt have insurance so i cant see any kind of doc? yeah...this bites

i posted a thread on the training board but i think most of the people that can help me are on this board and not many have seen that thread

20 rep dead sets....that just cries back injury. What would posses someone to do 20 reps on a deadlift. Thats like doing 20 rep squats or breathing squats and anybody that does those in my opinion haver got to be temporarily insane. Just out of curiosity , if you were doing a Mass/Strenght program why would you be doing 20 reps? Why not like 4 sets of 6 or 3 sets of 8 or something along those lines. Was this a program that you read about? I don't know of any PL that does 20 reps of anything unless it is prehab or rehab work.

alright..today im getting some cash. i could go see an awesome sports doc in the area but last time i had to go (w/o any insurance) it cost 100 bucks just for an appointment. i dont know how much it is for rehab..now i could spend all my money on this and hopefully get it fixed or i could use the money and buy a squat rack or a bench shirt and some bands.

BUT my back is getting the tiniest bit better so maybe i'll be fine after a couple weeks?

BUT my best bet is probably get it taken care of so it never bothers me again..

idunno thats a tough decision...
whered you get that much money from? i want some.

try to convince your parents to pay for it.. they should have gotten insurance for you, and then with your money go buy some bands and a squat rack and bench shirt.

well i got a birthday coming up next friday so that'll help w/ the money.. i will TRY to get them to pay for it but i doubt it will work. they'll bitch at me and never allow me to lift again..

i got the money for working for my dads construction biz the week after i ruined my back...talk about pain. but im getting a nice wad of money

hmm.. i think i have a solution..
walk into a big store, and then drip some water on the floor.. hide the water bottle, come back and pretend you slipped on the water and hurt your back really bad.... i think they'll be willing to pay for the doctors after that.

lol..if i was over 18 i would do that. i dont think my rents will like the idea

no no i got a better idea...

tell them you got hurt from working for your dads construction biz...he'd feel guilty

OR ask him to go to work with him again and fake the injury... so he'll pay for it haha

haha..no, thats alright t3c. good ideas though

here's how today went....DE bench

used 125 for a couple sets but decided the weight wasnt moving fast enough. dropped down to 100 pounds and got 8 sets of 3...the last few sets had decent speed.

tri BB extensions... 70 lbs x 4 sets of 8

side shoulder raises.. 20 lb DB's 3x10

couldnt do bent over side raises so i just did shoulder presses...20 lb DB's 3x10.

the pain didnt get any worse than it already was. i just got done piling brush in the woods for an hour and a half. the pain is just about gone.

feels fucking great to start back up again

:destroy:

im not back totally..but today was great. hell yeah

well.. we did some email a few days back but i think its safe to say now you dont have a herniated disc cause you wouldn't be doing shit if you did.

so... lets assume you bulged a disc and probably over-torked some lower back muscles...

i would continue the stretching. do you have access to bands? these are an excellent rehab device? bands good mornings, band raises, reverse hypers, etc.

i wouldnt start back on the deadlifts just yet. btw: i don't think high rep deadlifts necessarily cause injuries. high rep deadlifts to FAILURE do because your form will go to shit on the last few reps.

if you are gonna do 20 reps sets, do it with something you can EASILY pump out maintaining form. this will flush blood in their and help with the healing process.

recently, i strained my lower back before last meet. fortunately, i had 8 days of rest where i used ice, massage and strectching. i would say i was back at 90% at the meet. it takes time. and for the next 2 weeks, i am not doing any box squats, me back work, or pulls..... just recovery work.

hope it works out for you.

thanks...i haven't ordered bands yet but i will tonight. any idea how long they take?

another question...if a person has a bulging disc...does that disc ever go back to normal or is it always bulging and pressing on nerves, etc?

here is what i know about a bulging disc.

the body reabsorbs the material over time. you are not necessarily pressing on nerves but you *may* be.

the younger you are, the quicker your body will recover.

when you herniate a disc (or discs as i did 3 years ago), the material 'leaks' out and usually does aggravate a nerve. again, the body heals itself by reabsorbing it. surgery is only done when there is severe pain OR 'cauda equina' syndrome occurs. this is a condition where the nerves controlling bowel/bladder are affected and it can be life threatening.

you DONT have this so dont get scared.

just take your time. try and get your core muscles strong when you are healed..... abs, abs, abs, and lower back my friend!

btw: you should tell your folks that NOT having insurance is irresponsible regardless of whether you lift weights or not.

i would NOT waste my money going to a doctor unless you are still in extreme pain in a month. if its not an ortho, the worthless guy will probably tell you that you need xrays which is bullshit. an ortho *may* tell you to order an MRI which will cost 1000+ without insurance.

here is another idea:

why dont you buy insurance with the money you have saved. at your age, it cant be too expensive. then in a month, if problems still persist, go see a doctor then. just a thought.

good luck!

you say i could see one in a month if im still in extreme pain..do you think i should be healed by then, or partly healed and the pain just isnt as bad as it gets right now?
