Goodmornings - feeling it in my back?

I've only JUST started doing goodmornings, and I watched Spatts video and did my best to mimic her form.

However, while doing the exercise I feel it most in my mid & lower back. Is that normal? I'm not sure if :

a) my back is just weak (quite likely)
b) my form is bad

If my back is just weak, that's fine, it'll strengthen as I go, but if my form is bad I don't want to keep doing it and risk injury.

Is it normal to first feel it in the back, before the glutes and hams?

Sounds like you're doing it right. Just make sure your back stays stable throughout the move. Are your legs straight or bent? You can do it either way, I'm just curious.

If you keep it up, I think you'll be pleased with how much GMs help your other lifts.

Be sure to start with a manageable weight and gradually increase to allow your body time to adjust to the new movement.

Good Luck!

Thanks Makedah.

I tried to keep my legs straight but found (due to my poor flexibility) I couldn't bend far enough forward to get my back parallel to the ground, so I switched to bending the knee a little bit until that improves.

Bob46: Yep, I made that mistake the very first rep.. too much weight. Almost toppled forward. Great way to injure yourself eh? :( Anyway, I went way lighter the next time round.

I always do them with bent knees. I have good ham flexibility, but I injured my back when I was a kid so I prefer to not do them straight-legged. As I've heard it, if you do them with straight legs, you WILL hit the back more. So, it would make sense that you feel it in your back first.

Also, it's common for women to have strong legs while they (and most men, too) haven't worked their erectors much. If that's the case with you, I can see how you might feel your low back is working harder than your hams/butt.

Really? I read that they're supposed to target glutes primarily and then hams. That's why I thought I was doing something wrong.

So thanks for the correction Spatts, if it's for back, then that's perfect cause that's where I feel it! :)

It's gonna hit your whole posterior chain, but the lower back takes the biggest beating (depending on what variations you're using).
