Deli Meat and its protein content?????

I have recently started buying about 2 pounds of sliced turkey and chicken every week to eat throughtout the day at work and even put some on some whole grain wheat for fiber and such, do any of you guys eat alot of deli meat for protein and have you found it as a good source or alternative to protein shakes and bars?????

I just did a quick look on the net and most sites 1 slice of turkey/chicken deli meat has approximately 7-8 grams of protein. So a sandwich with 4-5 slices will give you 28-40 grams of protein of just meat. This is pretty good, the only thing I’m not sure on is the fat content.

i eat alot of cut turkey breast or whatever is on sale- taste is kinda blah, but I wrap 3-4 slices in a tortilla as a snack- good 20grms. or protein...

I don't think the fat content is any different from the regular meat. However, most of those meats are cured or smoked, which means that the sodium levels go way the hell up. If that's not a problem for you, then I think it's as good a protein source as any.

The pre-packaged ham slices I buy are as follows.

35c 5 protein and 16% sodium a slice. 96% lean
and
25c 5 protein and 16% sodium a slice. 98% lean

The protein content is awsome specially on the second one hell I've eated 24 slices in a day because its awsome for cutting high protein quite filling and low cal, I mean 600c 120pro, is pretty nice.

The sodium is sickeningly high though, but in the end its doesn't really effect anything doesn't impede fatloss, just makes you temporarily water heavy and look a bit worse whish is disheartening. If you wash the stuff off before, you can eliminate alot of the sodium can't be certain how much but I can taste the difference in salt content. Wish there was a 25c 5 pro low sodium brand that would own.

food is always better as a protein source than shakes-chicken is high in protein, turkey is average-the top sources are steak and any other red meat

There was a magazine article on this topic just this month (I think the body for life mag).

1) The nitrites in deli meats are oncogenic, e.g can cause cancer, definitely shown in studies.

2) The 96% lean slice has 4% fat, but the caloric content is actually 30% of calories from fat!!!
e.g. must be very careful.

Always, sliced whole turkey/chicken breast is 1000% better than the processed meats that you often find on sale.

I swear I have compared chicken against turkey and they both had the same amount of protein...maybe im wrong:(

It's not the protein amount he's talking about, it's the source:

e.g. the associated fat and the type of fat.
Chicken and turkey are far superior to red meats
Fish (because of the oligo fats) are way superior to meats, and
egg white, whey, and soy far superior to all others because do not
contain any fats and you can therefore supplement the very best fats
if you so chose.
