Swimming is VERY good for you. You can swim on lifting days, just remember to increase your calorie intake. Swimming deceivingly burns a ton of calories. Its pushing/pulling the water that uses a lot of energy. I swim 3/4 days a week. Sometimes its long slow distance, and somedays its an hour and a half of Sprints (HELL)! You can find some good info at goswim.tv Some people say that swimming loosens you up and helps aid in muscle soreness and recovery. I have been swimming, running and lifting for 2 years and I agree.
