Straight Leg vs Deadlifts?

Is there any real advantage of doing real deadlifts opposed to straight leg? I can keep my form doing straight leg deadlifts much easier since I don't have to worry about keeping my back straight (unlike regular deadlifts where you have to bend your legs to pick up the weight, this is a very unnatural movement for me and I find myself doing a deadlift on the first rep then slowly progressing towards straight leg deadifts by time I am finished with my set.)

Straight legs are pretty much a ham and glute exercise, deadlifts incorporate nearly the entire lower body. Straight legs are absolutely no substitute for regular deadlifts. Go lighter and perfect that form :)

I just did deadlifts again with very light weight (150lbs) just to try and get my form. The way my old football coach taught me to deadlift was to keep my back perfectly straight up and down and squat then pick up the weight. This movement is pretty much impossible for me. Today I decided to just keep my upperback straight and bend my lowerback some. I found it was amazingly easy to do and after I was done my legs, lower back, upper back, and lats were all pumped, not just my lower back and legs as if I were doing it the way my coach taught me. Is doing it like this correct?

yes. keep your back as straight as possible the entire time. when youre standing with the weight, squeeze your back muscles also. im assuming you did this, as you say they were pumped.

I agree straight leg much better for hams and also good for back. If you can't do regular deads with good form just do straight or go realy light till you get the form down.

Most people's form breaks down when you do reps of deadlifts. That is oe reason why the deadlift is best trained in singles. Reset the weight and start over after each rep. Your form should be much better.

I like stiff-leg deadlifts!!! My hamstrings and lower back are fried after using them. I typically work with 275lbs to 315lbs on these. I always keep the bar travel along my shins, knees, and thighs when performing these. If I do deadlifts, I will do half-deads on the power rack to emphasize the back.
