Spinlock dumbbell sets worth it?

Hey,

I wanna have some dumbbells in my garage for a private workout, but for a set I'm looking at a little over $200 for 15-55 lbs. What's the max a spinlock set can hold? Oh, for those who don't know... the dumbbell bars with the attachable weight plates. Way less expensive, but kind of a hassle, but if they're worth it for a private gym...

I have the ones where they are just a straight bar, you add the 10's/25's/5's etc...to it and put the spin locking collars on. I bought some at Hibbet, Wal-Mart, etc...

They aren't the best...but they work for me and can also be used on my lat pull down machine and my EZ curl bar...

Ohhhh...I have made them to 100's before. Made a pair of 120's the other day and one of them bent while I was trying to do incline dbell presses with it....

haha, man. won't be needing to go quite that high... so that's what you use for your primary weights, or do you gym it up? probably gonna swing by a sporting goods store after work... I dunno what it is - I'm not worried about how I look at the gym or anything, but just in private it seems like I'd get a way more intense workout.

I train in my garage. I don't use dbells much...usually either barbells or events.

I also workout at home and use spinlock dumbbells. I take them up to 80 pounds with no problem, but haven't needed to go heavier yet (I also have an Olympic set for bigger lifts). You can easily add more weight by using the 25# weights, but I find them too big and awkward. I prefer to stick with tens. My bars could eaily fit five plates on a side, but I don't how heavy you can go before they bend.

i use these because i had the cheap clamps slide off one time when i was doing an overhead movement and nearly landed several plates on my face.

The Larger the Plates you use on the DB cores, the more weight you can get them to.

Usually you can get 4 plates a side and the spin lock will still have room to hold.
I had a set that came with like 2-10lb plates and had to find heavier ones to make it over 80Lbs.

Spin locks are a bit slower to change out the weight but are very secure and tight.
No clacking and jiggling of the plates during the lifts like with some collars.

Buy a few DB cores and then make up a few different weight combination so you can Pyramid or Drop set easily.

Overall, I used them all throughout wrestling seasons and when I was working out at home. They are great!!! You can find 5lb dumbbell handles with spinlocks that are strong and of high quality. I don't think you can make dumbbells over 100lbs, as there is only so much space. Get them if you can afford them! I have seen them for sale at $25 a pair.
