Pre-competition dieting and training

Hey guys and gals, I need some input on pre-competition dieting and training. I have a buddy that is 21, 6'2" and weighs 225#. He wants to compete in September. He's been training about 3-4 years and has put on some good size. Should he try top bulk up then cut up or just try to gain quality muscle? He's a natural trainer, so gear is out of the question at this point in time. What tips can you give me? Thanx, Nico
 
It's too hard for a natty to lose a lot of bodyfat, so I'd recommend keeping the bodyfat increase to a minimum. I personally try to stay within 10% of my competition weight year round. Even then, it takes at least 12 weeks to lean out slowly enough so I'm not dropping a bunch of muscle.
