I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the people to receive a free order of a bag of oatmeal from MyOatmeal.com. I decided to go ahead and make a custom blend and see how it turned out. After searching for a while I ended up going with the following:
5 Grain Rolled Oats
Bananas Foster flavor
Bananca Chips
Cranberries
Pineapple
Splenda
Chia Seeds
The ordering process was very easy and shipping was fantastic - the order went out the day I placed it and was received less than 48 hours later. The packaging is perfect and has a resealable top which is obviously a nice feature for storing it.
I ended up trying it in two different ways:
1. Microwaved one cup of the oatmeal mix with about a cup or so of vanilla flavored unsweetened almond milk. I have to say it was probably the second-best tasting bowl of oatmeal I've ever had (the only one better I can think of was in a high end bed and breakfast in Ireland over 15 years ago). The texture is just absolutely amazing - the different grains all have different feels and then the fruits and chia seeds . . . can't say enough about it. I was tempted to try adding a scoop of chocolate protein to it after cooking and maybe some PB2 (chocolate bananas and peanut butter are always a good combination). However it was just so damned good I just couldn't make myself mess with it.
2. Mix one half cup of the oatmeal with a 16oz carton of egg whites and cook it up like scrambled eggs. This is a variant of a dish I've made before (started when logging NuBlend7 but have done several variations of it). It's just fantastic. Mixing oats with egg whites causes it to create almost a souffle and the various addins from the custom blend gave awesome flavor and texture.
My only critique of the product is that the nutritional information is based on weight rather than volume. Oats and oatmeal are traditionally measured by volume - a half cup in most cases. The use of 40g as the standard makes it tough to get a real feel for how much you are using, or at least it did for me.
Other than that I have nothing bad to say about the product. I fully expected to be underwhelmed but went into it with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised. I'm definitely going to order more, though I'll make sure to pick out a few varieties and order all at once to minimize shipping.
