Lasting Pain in Arms During Workout

Snarling Force

Active member
For the last 3 weeks or so, when I work out my arms, the burning fire feeling in the muscles of my arms, most specifically in the shoulder area, does not stop at a normal rate when I cease a set. Its quite painful as I have to walk it off around the gym until the burning goes away. When the burning subsides, I still feel it a slight bit. Then as I continute on and complete another set into my workout, the burning gets worse and the burning lasts even longer as I progress. Its getting to the point where its holding me back and this is quite frustrating.

The only thing that I was thinking it could be was about 4 weeks back, I started taking 1-AD and 4-AD but after doing a lot of looking around about this issue, I can't find anyone else having similar symptoms. What could be causing this long and heavy burning? What can I do to make it go away? Thanks for any help and guidance. I'm still new to lifting and I am trying to learn as much as I can. This board is an amazing resource. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I've been lifting steadily 5 days per week since Sep 1st, 2002. I've worked out on and off throughout my life but never anything as consistent as my run since Sep.

My bi workout consists starting off with dumbell curls, 3 sets, then I move to doing 3 sets of curls with a straight bar. Then its on to seated preacher curls for 3 sets, and finally I do isolated dumbell curls for 3 sets per arm. By this time, the burning has gotten so bad I pretty much cannot continue. I notice too if I lift my arms above my head, my shoulders burn fiercely and feel like they have rubber bands in them or something that is pulling my arms down.

Alrighty then......12 sets is way too much for biceps. Generally speaking, you are overtraining them. Six to eight sets is plenty. So add weight and do fewer sets.

Crap, again I have to agree with slimtime. Drop the volume man.

Do you feel the pain during any other lifts or any other time during the day?

Wow thanks for the advice! I had no idea. I'm kind of still new to all of this. My partner that I work out with and I both really don't know a whole lot about such things. I'll definitely tone things down. As for the pain during other sets and in times throughout the day, yes I do feel that strange burning but only if I raise my arms above shoulder level. For example right now if I put my arms straight up in the air, my shoulders begin to hurt and I feel that burning starting to set in.

Is 5 times a week too much? I'm beginning to think I'm doing it all wrong. The reason its 5 times per week is because my place of employment buys us memberships to a really nice gym and I just really want to take advantage of this opportunity. Plus the gym is about a 5 minute walk from here. Everyday at 11:30 my partner that I work with and I head to the gym. We just started doing it back in September and we have just never stopped. We do a different body part each day. Its convienient because I get to work out during work hours so it never interferes with my time at home or me being too tired. Its right there, right in front of my face and I just thought that by using it to the fullest, everyday that I work which is Mon-Fri, is the best way to go. Am I going about it all wrong? Is this too much? Sorry for sounding so in the dark but I really don't have anyone to guide me. I try to read up on as much as I can. Thanks again for reading and offering advice everyone.
