I never feel my back working, when doing deads anybody got....?

C-Ditty, join the perky-ass club! You could pitch a tent on mine :D I haven't been squatting and deadlifting for very long, so I guess I'm just naturally blessed/cursed with it.

If you don't like deadlifts, then I don't like you!

LOL :D

And yes, I have a ghetto booty, and I'm very proud of it. And no, I won't post picks of my ass. ;)

I think some people say "DEADLIFT" when they mean to say "ROMANIAN DEADLIFT." There is no "lowering" a deadlift. It's concentric.

I might have to make this a soap box sticky too...

Q1 - What's a Romanian deadlift?

Q2 - What do you mean by "there is no lowering a deadlift?"

I mean that a deadlift is just that...pick the weight up off the floor. Even if you rep it out, you can just drop it, reset, and lift again. Generally when people talk about lowering it with control and the ass not coming back, they're talking about ROMANIAN deadlifts which are the exact opposite of deadlifts. You start standing up, and bend over, the come back up...usually for reps. There is a very distinct, controlled, concentric and eccentric phase. In my opinion, they are far more "dangerous" than a true deadlift, for no other reason than it's harder to maintain the form that prevents the move from being dangerous in the first place.

I could see where akaba and punch are coming from. The thing about deadlift, is that the only muscles that AREN'T exercised isometrically are the legs and ass. If you're looking to build a powerful upper back, deadlift wouldn't be the way to go since they include no eccentric motion for those muscles. Deadlifting is about strengthening the spinal erectors, and generally beefing up the posterior chain.

The spinal erector is a funny muscle: it's almost impossible to exercise without putting nasty torque on the vertebrae. Seems like Spatts is a testament to the erector-building power of the deadlift though.

I could be entirely wrong though, seeing as the only deadlift I ever did was to get an abandoned 135-lb barbell off the ground onto the power rack pins. So please correct me if that's the case. :P

exactly CASUALBB!! Squats are an overall movement as well but you will NOT get a big back doing them. Lats or more specifically the upper back region needs direct stimulous to grow bigger, ie. bent over rows, wieghted pull ups, T-bar etc. I think we are confusing powerlifting and body sculpting again.

I never thought deads did much for the upper back to begin with...especially since powerlifters don't shrug the bar back to complete the movement.

Maybe I'm not getting casualbb's point...

I disagree. I know you can build overall body mass with squats. Everything grows.

Too much science. I don't even know what the hell isometrically means. Just squat and deadlift, for crying out loud. You'll get huge, bottom line. :bday:
