How to know when you've done enough sets

The comment about average people was that I have studied methods for training average people to maintain basic minimal fitness levels. Where on earth would you get the impression that that was what *I* aspired to? Not at all.

Well, since most people here do not aspire to mediocrity, anything the ACE or most other aerobics based orgs say is not exactly relevant. :)

HOLD UP HERE - I just remembered a great debate on my aerobics instructor bulletin board. The question was - is part of the role of the instructor to MOTIVATE & ENTERTAIN - i.e. to make it FUN?! Or just to lead the workout, cue for safety, etc.

Movtivating and entertaining are for pre-school teachers. People should actually be serious about working toward a goal. Few things can take the place of a feeling of accomplishment after years of work. This is fun. If they want cheap entertainment, rent a porno.

Someone wrote a very eloquent piece on the fact that Exercise is inherently unpleasant Hey, blasphemy, I know. Personally, I love it - but I understand how many people do not. That being the case - the rules for how those people should train for basic health are vastly different - shouldn't they be??? I wasn't talking about athletes!

Well, the rules for basic health are frequently watered-down verions of the rules for athletes, and are freqently misapplied and often just plain ignored. The rules should be the same, but how many women who "just want to tone up their legs" do you actually see in the squat rack? Not many, yet which will do more, especially per unit of time, squats or jumping around to bad music?

Now it sounds like you're telling me there's no upper limit & don't worry about discomfort - whereas last week I heard I was overtraining my shoulders & my bicep training also had a very high volume?!

In your case it is a quesiton of prioritizing until you learn to adjust your focus.

You have seen what my top end training was like.

So considering that is how I began in fitness & that is what a large part of my studying & learning has been based upon.... my knowledge is worthless & I should totally just shut up? OK.

As I mentioned in an e-mail today, I enjoy working with people who were formerly sedentary. No, fitness is NOT FUN for these people. They can't see it as fun. I enjoy playing a part in helping to CHANGE that & CHANGE how they feel about exercise. That IS part of my role as a group exercise instructor.

Jumping jacks in aerobics class is for CARDIO - not strength training. Not comparable. Most people need to do something to make cardio not so boring - I think that's why there are TV's above the equipment in every gym.

In any case, there is no doubt that most people are misinformed (that freaking "toning" myth). Although I poke fun at clueless 'Cardio Bunnies', I do enjoy spreading the truth & helping to steer them in the right direction, those who will listen (& there have been plenty). Rather than only looking down on them. But I suppose there is no worth in this?

I would never say that. There is no such thing as worthless knowledge. Its application, however, varies greatly.

Oh, I see. <shudder> You are far more tolerant than I.

If people have time to be bored, they are not working hard enough. Any gym with a television in it should be burned to the ground.

I am far too kind to poke fun at anybody.

Could be some. You should start a webpage. You could entitle it "Conversion of the Clueless" and each covert could be shown by a crossed out aerobics step, rather like a kill sign.

Arioch...I think your quote deserves to be on a t-shirt also.

I want to know what Spatts used to do while she was doing her 60 minutes of cardio FTITM walking uphill on a treadmill. There's NO WAY that can be strenuous enough to demand all of your attention. -> Not everyone who does moderate intensity cardio is a loser.

I fail to see why doing cardio makes you a geek or worthy of destruction.

I still like step aerobics so kiss my :mommakin:

Am I to start to believe that an integration of worlds - aerobics & general fitness (teaching my yoga-based class, etc.) & PL / OL can not possibly be done? I can't be an OLer aerobics instructor?!
You're making me feel that way.

I have no desire to eat the weak. I'd like to help them get stronger. I guess that's why I'm better suited to be a personal trainer than a competitive PLer.

You seem to have taken the comments that were made WAY TOO PERSONALLY!! Can't speak for Arioch...but everything that I said has been said in jest.

Eat the weak is a state of mind. Doesn't mean I want to do it. I consider myself to be a very good teacher...and I enjoy helping people get stronger. I like to think I do that every day at my gym. It's not for a lack of effort. Anyone that lifts with me knows that I will go out of my way to help people better themselves if they really want it.

Being competitive doesn't mean that you can't help people in the process. I think I do both rather well....but opinions vary.

Hannibal,

I definitely can tell you enjoy teaching - based on your posts to other people & the way we've all seen you teaching Spatts. Very cool, & thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Um, Arioch's comments were directed at me, were they not? Every comment he wrote was underneath a quote of mine & the posts were interspersed with mine - so I don't see how I could not take it personally. I didn't take yours that way though.
