Eating foods that aren't in diet

When I'm in training mode for a competition, I can sometimes become
psychotic with following my diet. However, I do give myself some
leeway to keep my sanity and I'm just curious if other competitors out
there allow themselves cheats like this on their diet. This is not a
cheat in the typical sense - it's a cheat because it has not been
written by my trainer as part of my diet.

Here it goes - I have been adding miracle noodles to some meals to
fill me up (for those who do not know, these have zero calories, zero
carbs and basically no nutritional value at all - it's all
psychological for me); I treat myself after my mid-day meal with a
5-calorie sugar-free pack of Hunt's jell-o; when I'm itching for my
next meal, I slice up 5 medium white button mushrooms and dip in zero
calorie spicy mustard to hold me over (again this is psychological
because 20 calories is hardly a satiating snack); my meals call for
1/2 cup of green veggies and I usually just load the hell out of my
dishes with spinach or asparagus (probably hitting closer to the 1.5
cup measurement, thus adding an extra 50 or so calories to my daily
allotment).

Another thing I sometimes consider is changing out my protein or carb
sources for ones with the same nutritional profile. For example,
ground 99% lean turkey breast is a close comparison to ground chicken
breast. Or, what about wheat bran in place of oatmeal? Wheat bran
actually has a superior nutritional profile to oatmeal and I can use
1/2 cup wheat bran in place of 1/3 cup of oatmeal in the morning for
breakfast.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
