dizzy after deadlifts?

Hi! I've been lurking a bit recently, but this is my first post.

Today I was at the gym doing DLs, I did the weight I'd done last time, and that seemed kind of easy, so I added ten pounds and did another set, which seemed OK, so I added another ten pounds and did another set (3 reps). It was fine when I was doing it, but as soon as I put the bar down I started shaking and I felt all dizzy, like I was going to pass out if I didn't sit down right away. People were looking at me all concerned, and the head trainer guy came over and asked me if I was OK and said I shouldn't do so much weight if I felt sick afterwards.

I was wondering, is this normal? Should I ignore scrawny trainer boy? I felt fine within a couple minutes, actually I was quite pleased with myself and went to do some pullups:) I often feel kind of light-headed after doing squats, but never before like I might actually faint.

Thanks! Lola.

Had you eaten anything yet that day? Did you get enough sleep the night before? And did you remember to keep breathing between reps?

Even if you were fine on all that stuff, a unusually intense workout can make you dizzy or even vomit. Could be you just pushed it to a new level that day.

anya is right with her suggestions.

i always feel lightheaded after an intense set. my offhanded explanation is that my legs and back sucked all the blood from my brain.

i wouldn't worry too much, unless you do actually pass out.

My thoughts exactly...

I don't usually get dizzy when I DL or squat, etcetera...maybe I'm not working hard enough!! I hear a lot of guys saying that they feel like throwing up after a tough leg workout...but I've never expericed that either...at least not in the gym. I only get that way after running on the track (back in my college softball days).

:elephant: ----> :sick:

something like this happened to me once (just working out not deadlifting) and I found out I was pregnant....not to scare you or anything....you could be anemic...or maybe you just really pushed it

Thanks guys! I think Anya might be right - while I'd like to think I am smart enough to breathe and lift at the same time, I do sometimes forget. Not usually with such drastic results, but still ...

Nonerz....

you played softball!?!?!?...kick ass. i coach softball at my school. my favorite event this season was making dirt-angels at home plate after we won both games on the last day of the season.

I don't breathe when I deadlift. When going heavy...you shouldn't. You can let the air out in between reps...but as you are pulling...your abs should be pushed out and you should be holding your breath.

If blood sugar might be the problem, you can get the glucose tabs at Wal-Mart really cheap. Chew on a few before you train...and maybe one or two while you train. I love them. Helps to keep my blood sugar more stable.

Also, think about this. Are you grinding/squeezing your teeth together in the back when you lift? My dentist told me that I am crushing my teeth when I strain because I am squeezing my jaws so tight...and that it might actually be the reason why I am feeling a little light headed from time to time...I'm nearly knocking my own self out...lol.

Just a few thoughts...

Thanks! Well, I am sure I'm not pregnant. I don't breathe during the lift - but I think maybe I don't breathe between reps either in short sets. I will try the glucose thing - I am generally starving halfway through a workout anyhow.

Remember heavy compound movements require more oxygen in the body than something like bicep curls. Quick breath between each rep should keep you going.

And hey dont run away. We need more women posting! :D
