define "max" effort

I'm adding some higher rep stuff into my max effort rotation such as illegal wides and high rep dumbbell presses. I read its good to do this every once in a while to give the CNS a break I guess.

What makes something max effort? Nearing falure? or..what?
 
Either 3 reps or under and go until you miss the weight. allways try for a pr then go for it after that.
 
for me its: 3-4 second all out for BP movements , maybe 5-7 seconds for a squat , and about 3-5 seconds for a GM. when I do sets of three I expect the last rep of each set to be really really slow or I fail on the third rep.

t3c, when you read abuot doing dumbell work every once and a while on your ME days -- it's not for max effort... but for repetition. You don't max out with dumbells, you just use it when you're feeling beat up... whether that's your CNS wearing out, or for me my joints will start to bother me. You just give your body a break from the heavy weights, and take a week or two for recuperation.
