Deadlift, for big boys

Ok I need some help with dead lifting.

I've always done deadlift with knuckle pointing foward. Then last night I remembered back in HS I did reverse grip, one hand knuckles forward, and other hand palm foward, so I tried this last night. I lifted about another 100 pound more this way and for more reps because my grip didn't give out. Is this alright to do this way? I mean my back is so sore/stiff today, in a good way. I just want to make sure I'm not going to pull anything or lose out on anything. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Yeah bro its definitely alright this the way that I always do my deads.. one thing to remember is just to alternate your hand positions.. for example if you do left palm forward for your first set, do right palm forward for your 2nd etc.

That way you dont have to worry about one side of your body receiving more stress than the other.
:D:D

Yup, that's how I do them too. Weird thing is, it doesn't seem like the grip would make that much difference, but it does for som reason.

Yep, definitely remember to alternate which hand you supinate, otherwise you WILL get an imbalance.

I like the hook grip, too. This is basically where you loop your thumbs around FIRST, then wrap your fingers around the bar, and have your index and middle finger (and possibly ring finger) grip ON TOP of your thumb. This may be pretty uncomfortable the first few times, but it's a rock-solid grip.

that's called a semi-supinated grip. keep using it...don't let the grip factor limit the amount of weight you can do. it's all about tearing up that back.

Thanks for a ll the input. I really couldn't belive the difference that the grip made. I mean back in HS, I was deadlifting 135, so it didn't really matter what grip I was using. Now I was use 285 and I could only get like 6 for 4 sets...then I used the alternatie grip and 285 was easy...so I bumped it up to 335, and did 8,8,6,6. I'm totally stoked about it. It's great.

The alternate grip is how I have always deadlifted. The reason it helps so much is the bar can't rotate in your hands and cause fatigue like with both hands over or under.

I'm not flaming, but why not just use straps? Unless your training for PL, the straps take your grip out of the lift so that you can do max poundage for max reps. I do some PL, so I use straps some days and some days not.

I'm with Alcatraz on this...... Im training for the deadlift....... not my grip strength..why limit myself to the weights that only my grip can handle?? And I always use double overhand grip...don't want to get imbalanced development........I also love to use straps on chin ups and upright rows...........

Strap-less in Cincy

Three reasons I don't use straps. One, I don't use straps quite honestly because I don't like carrying anything around the gym. Second they always seem to pull my wrist to the point where it feels like they are going to pull out of joint, no matter what weight I use. Third, one hand always seems a bit more secure than the other, I always feel unbalanced.
