Confused about Good Mornings and Squats

How do goodmornings relate to squats? In the 9 week WSB program by dave tate it has these as your primary exercise on ME squat day. How do these need to be preformed to help your squat?

Goodmornings, done correctly, will hammer your entire posterior chain...everything from your rear delts to your calves. Your posterior chain is the end all be all in power. The stronger it is, the more weight you will move (and with less injury). I have found, across the board, that GM gains are directly proportional to squat gains. I once had a post up with videos of 15 different good morning variations, and a couple of them almost look like squats.

I also think good mornigns are AWESOME for deadlifts. Our crew has found conventional stance, chain suspended GM's to be great for increasing the conventional deadlift, and I have found that standing arched back GM's really help my sumo pull.

In a nut shell, you use the same muscles and power source for all three moves, just in different forms. That's assuming you use your glute/hams to squat, rather than your quads and knees. :)

"GM's. The other compound move." :D

OH! One of the best reasons: CHAOS RECOVERY.

When you're squatting and you lose balance, and start to fall forward with 500+ pounds on your back, you better have the posterior chain strength to get back in the plane and complete the squat.

okay, so what variation would you reccomend i use in the 9 week program.

I was looking at some of those videos you sent me, and some of them have more of a pushing motion with your quads? Would those be best to use on ME squat day?

Quads will be involved, since it's a total body movement. I feel it most in my erectors though. Yes, we do these on ME squat/DL day. We rotate them with squats and deads as the main move every couple weeks.
