Are girls are too soft to box?

Okay, that was just a cheap attention grabber! But it's what people keep saying to me.

I made this video for a laugh but it's had such a good response from the girls at the gym that I'm thinking of getting some kind of training.

I love taking a punch at the punchbag and would love to join a women's boxing club, but the only boxing club near me is all male. There is not one female boxer and as an absolute beginner I think I might feel really out of place.

I don't think I want to box competitively, I just want to use it as my main method of training and fitness.

I've tried posting in a couple of boxing forums and just got a load of abuse and sexual inuendo from the blokes. While I kind of expect that to a ceratin extent if i join my local club, I think it could soon really start to p$%£ me off.

So I just wanted your opinion girls? I guess bodybuilding is considered a very masculine sport too. Do you ever feel out of place? Do you get fed up with the jibes?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've really enjoyed reading some of your posts and looking at your photos. :)

(Oh! And if anyone can recommend a women's boxing forum I'd really appreciate it!)

Cute :qt: ! And welcome to EF!

I had a friend who boxed while she was in the army but have no idea about forums or anything.

As far as BB - I never really enjoyed the 'off season' - peopel always ask me if i'm a power lifter. I just feel thick. But otherwise I've never felt out of place int he gym & I'm proud of the body & muscle I've worked to built. And when I compete it does nothing but fascinate people.

I've seen gyms that have boxing classes - my gym does actually. But never did any of the classes.

Lemme tell you....

From a cardio perspective.....hititng a heavy/speed bag for 3 minute rounds with 1 minute between will lean you out like nobody's business.

Who cares what anyone else thinks.....if YOU like it - then DO it.

I agree with Shadow...If it is something you really want to do then don't let the meatheads put you off. They will get used to it after a while and you will find that you will just fit in like they do and they will come to respect you for your choices. :)

I take a boxing class twice a week - I love it.

That's all I really have time for right now and I am quite happy with what I get out of it.

I'd taken kick-boxing classes back while I was competing as a form of cardio and also to help with lagging shoulder development. Once I became a certified trainer I was constantly looking for newer movements and activities to encorporate into workouts designed for my clients' varying needs and goals.

I'd thought to look into a sweaty seedy boxing gym myself (started out in bodybuilding in a sweaty seedy bodybuilding gym so it seem natural) but I never got a chance to check one out.

Shadow is right on for what he is saying about cardio.

I would like someday to learn how to do the speedbag. I have ZERO eye-hand coordination LOL.

I think the thing that kept me from actually doing it is that I have NO INTEREST in hitting someone or being hit (long history of abuse here). But every other aspect of boxing fascinates me.

I say IF YOU WANT TO DO SOMETHING, WHY ARE YOU LETTING OTHER PEOPLE DECIDE FOR YOU THAT YOU CANT/SHOULDNT DO IT?

If you aren't interested in competition, then you don't really have to worry about that aspect of it -- there are more issues w/ it as far as regulations, safety, and just sheer limited number of people involved. But for everything short of that, I'd approach it as juts another sport you are interested in. I happened to like to "train" - and it just happens to be mostly w/ men. I don't look to "train for women / with women" --- the only place that matters is again for competition. I also used to train in a form of jujitsu where it didnt' matter male or female. The sparring was a bit daunting to me - mostly cuz I got partnered w/a guy who had several years of taikwando and liked to include flying spin kicks in his sparring.....

But otherwise - just do it!

I believe Mandy Polk (youngest IFBB professional right now) trains in MMA, and is thinking about competing....

aww how cute that was too cute it was you were punching that punching bag. Man you gotta move around it and not get into the habit of standing and punching. Also develop your punching technique. PLUS do not try to just hit the bag try to EXPLODE through it =D
