I was just thinking. I must be an idiot, there's probably a logical explanation but... if you can do at least one push-up, shouldn't you always be able to bench your bodyweight at least once?

My cousin can do like 14 push-ups (he's a big fucker) and can't lift more than 90 lbs benching. It's the same movement, just one of them has you ass up. ^^
 
You are pivoting off of your feet when you do a pushup so your just lifting a percentage of your bodyweight. It is as if you are a lever. The pushup position is also more comparable to a decline movement than to a flat.
 
have someone grab your feet and hold them in the air while you do pushups, you will notice the difference in leverage, it becomes much harder...
 
Even if you have someone grab your feet and hold them up, you are Still pivoting around the feet and therefore, only lifting partial weight.

Indeed you're right, but the different angle is quite important. As mentioned above, its much like a decline versus a flat bench. Most people are stronger through the plane a decline bench press follows.
