The "I am going to do a one-armed pull up" thread.....

I'm going to try the two 45 pounds plates, smooth side out here in a few hours. I'll let you know how it goes. For some odd reason I am sure I can do this. I don't know how I know I can though. I just keep visualizing myself doing it.

I realllllllllllly don't care that I can't do one of these, lol. ;) Nor do I want to train to be able to do them.

I want to be able to do a 1 arm pull up also, just b/c no one thinks its really all that possible(no one meaning my friends). It's not really a big goal of mine, just would be cool to be able to do. If it happens it happens, if not..well it will happen eventually anyhow ;).
Hey Thai, when do you work your grip? Just curious if you add that in your lifting schedule. Do you give it its own time everyday, or just 1 specific day or what?

leatherface,
I've only been really serious about grip training for about 6 months now, and I still haven't found the ideal placement of grip training time.

I lift 3-4 days a week and usually do some form of grip training about 5 days a week. 3 are usually very specific, sometimes light...and 2 days are very heavy where I do nothing but grip on off days from lifting. Like tomorrow is a grip day. No crushing tomorrow, just pinching and holds. I'll do something like the following....

Thickbar(2") holds 4-5 sets - timed
3" bar holds a couple timed sets
1 handed 25# plate pinches
1 handed 35# plate pinches
2 handed 45# plate pinches
2 handed 45# plate pinches with additional weight(25-45#)
Hub training with about 25#, 30#, 35#

My grip has been progressing very well so far, but I'd still like to find the niche to fit it in with the rest of my training a little better. I'm not willing to sacrifice the other parts of my body for grip, but its become very important to me nonetheless. It took me years to find the right schedule for my body, and I assume it will be a while before I find it for my grip.

I did this feat. Years ago and I'm still paying for it. A hanging 1 handed pullup without using the other arm for a brace.(Anyone can do that). I pulled something and it still bothers me.

I'm going to try experimenting with this tomorrow. My left biceps is injured... so it is going to have to be a right armed event... and if I make it I'm going to be cheating. I plan to use a strap to lock myself in.

Good luck. That will be an awesome feat. I believe that you outweigh me considerably as I'm only 193 right now and was 186 probably when I did the one handed pullup. I did it from a full stretch and it was a bitch. The key was getting a powerful pull from the start.

I can tell you that the place to start is doing a one arm full flexed hang. That's hanging at the top pull-up position with only one arm. If you cannot hold yourself there you certainly cannot get yourself there.

Once you can hold for a few seconds just do negatives. Eventually you will be able to do the pull-up. I was able to do one, but only one, at my strongest. A legitimate no bullshit full hang to full chin rep, with no funny hand placement or leveraging tricks.

Start with negs, that's the ticket.
