Question on losing weight, but gaining muscle.

I currently life every 2-3 days, and do cardio 4-5 times a week. I also eat roughly 1600 cal, mostly protein, and avoiding sugar as much as possible. I want to build muscle, (which i happily am), but i also want to slim down my size. Weight does not mean much to me anymore, as i felt fat at 240 lb, and still at 160. I now feel better than ever at 180, but is my diet interfering with my goal of getting stronger, but wanting to get leaner overall?

Totally eating way too little to gain significant muscle. I would say that you are probably underestimating your calories. Do a low carb, moderat fat and high protein. You cannot have both low carb and low fat, that will lead to muscle loss. Take a look at my recent post about the diet i am doing.

It's next to impossible to gain any significant muscle mass while simultaneously shedding a lot of body fat. Even if you're on a cycle - that's not an easy task.

You're much better off increasing calories above maintenance and then trying a cutting phase. The idea is to focus on one goal at a time - for instance - focus on building muscle mass and accept that you'll gain some body fat along the way. Then focus on fat loss while trying to preserve as much lean mass as possible - while accepting that you'll lose some along the way.

If you bump calories - and eat clean - you'll maximize muscle gain while minimizing fat gain.

I mean - think about the title of your thread - you want lose weight but gain muscle.....but muscle is weight - so what you're really asking is to lose weight but gain weight! Not possible!!

do what he said. do one at a time. lean bulking IS possible. cut out the cardio, and if you must, keep it in but keep it light. the right training program is important as well. dc, hst, and 5*5 are all great ones that people on the board use and trust. 5*5 is by fat the simplest to follow. supplements can help tons too, ie, creatine, gplenish, gluceroll r, and trex/lrex (for lean bulking). so can the right ratios. i'm on a 40p/30c/30f ration now and its great. the food is bland but i get to eat so much, i'm full all day, and i know its healthy for me and will maximize the muscle gains and minimize the fat gains. none of this advice is mine. i've gotten it all from what i've learned on the board. there are great people here who care and can help alot. read everything. good luck
