Question about training a lot, cortisol and dieting.

What do you think - if one were training like I've outlined on my other recent threads, could that cause the release of enough cortisol to prevent fat loss despite careful and mostly very self-controlled dieting?

It COULD reduce your fatloss compared to your muscle loss, but your weight should still be dropping if calories are in the negative zone. If you're not losing any weight, then it could be because you are not in calorie deficit, you're gaining muscle while losing fat (sounds ideal, doesn't it), or you're losing fat/muscle but fluid retention is going up. Stress (such as dieting or overtraining) can cause fluid retention. Or maybe your scales are broken. No way of knowing which it is without a decent body comp.

Oh, I'm losing. NOW I'm losing, finally, finally losing - too late, and not enough. But why the frick do I have to beat my body into a senseless pulp to LOSE, dammit!

I meant before, and earlier this year. The only thing I can think is that I must have been doing the refeeds wrong. Or that my body is programmed to live on air and egg whites. Or that, despite exhibiting not a single one of the documented symptoms of overtraining, I was somehow overtraining.

When I came to these boards I was stuffing down 4000 cals a day and couldn't gain an ounce. I think all this dieting has wrecked my metabolism :(

I'm fed up.

That seems to be the concensus with women and BB diets. Honestly, I can't see how competition level dieting is GOOD for anyone in today's world of easily available post comp yummy food. I am always very diligent at informing would-be female competitors that this is a possible consequence of aiming for that one day of glory. That may sound cynical, but the vast majority of natty amateur female BBs end up with more bodyfat post comp than they had pre comp, and also find it harder to diet for the next comp. Of course this also seems true in the general population. Almost everyone is getting fatter and yo-yo dieting is still alive and well amongst non BB folks too! NO ONE EVER SAID IT WOULD BE EASY.

That is the other concensus amongst amateur natty female BBs. The vast majority never compete for more than a year or two. So you're in good company.

Starting Sunday, I'm looking at living on 1500 calories/day for the next 8 weeks to get to the level of leanness I need for the Worlds, and I'm not thrilled about it. All I can think about is the amount of muscle I may end up losing. I'm definitely taking a long break after this one. A BB diet is NOT a healthy lifestyle; but I think we all knew that going into it; it's just figuring out how to prevent mass fat gain after comp. I still seem to have better luck with anabolic type diets than with carb eating when it comes to limiting "fat development" post comp. :-) Wouldn't it be nice if muscle development was as easy as fat development?

steel, if you dont have it you need to get rob faigin's "natural hormonal enhancement." this is the most helpful, informative, sensical book ive ever purchased. $30.00 but worth every penny and more. i think it will answer a lot of your questions and solve a lot of what you say your problems are :)

Spatts - Will you trade places with me? Please? At least until December?

I get the "last meal' tonight - Cheesecake Factory! I think I'll have cheesecake for my appetizer, cheesecake for my entree, cheesecake for dessert...and a couple glasses of wine. I'm already scared to step on the scale Sunday and get my starting weight and measurements.

Fuck that. I'm not giving up.

I will find a way to make this work for me - the whole thing - the diet, the competing, the lifestyle. And if I make stupid, stupid mistakes along the way - all the better the lessons learnt will be.
