Muay Thai....

I will be starting Muay Thai in the following weeks...I have heard different opinions on it...I'm a newbie to martial arts but am fairly athletic...some have told me it's too brutal, others have said it's a great form of cardio and self defense, which sounds very appealing to me...like to hear some opinions on it from those who are practicing this martial art...

After studying various arts for about 20 years, I've found MT to be the most efficient and practical art yet. Its simple and logical. I'm going to assume by your name and the fact that people said "its too brutal", that you're a girl. I've known many female fighters that love the art. MT was developed for the small framed, small muscled Thai people as a war was threatening their country. They needed to design a martial art that complimented their structure and was simple and brutal, so in theory, MT is actually ideal for women. I've taught my girlfriend many things from MT. She's 5'4" 115# and she's getting so good at round kicks and different follow throughs that I feel sorry for the dude that ever fucks with her. Study it and see how you like it, just make sure you find a good instructor. Good luck and have fun with it.

i dont think muay thai is for females.... to be effective in muay thai you must have strong bones an females dont have realy strong bones as men. men design the art so it cant b for girls

Muay Thai is mainly a 'sport' not an art for self defense. It is great for self defense, but in honesty, the best self defense are arts who practice fighting for street, no holds barred.. Also, Muay Thai is not an easy art to learn, many people think it is, but it all depends on how serious you are...... BTW... Want to be a street fighter? Learn Muay Thai, grappling, kenpo karate art: submission wrestling is awesome, ROMAN Wrestling, BJJ, and Freestyle wrestling are all pretty good. E-mail me for tapes, info, etc. Peace

Again, here you go spoutin' off bullshit. Muay Thai is not an easy art to learn?  Yeah, try to acheive an equal level of eficiency in any traditional art in the same time period as Thai. Please do not help people with knowledge you do not have.

Kenpo Karate???

I agree with the grappling and Muay Thai, but Kenpo? Are you serious. Not to many bad ass NHB fighters coming with that Kenpo background.

Pink,

Muay Thai is going to be tough, but give it a shot. If you don't like it, you can always try something else.

One question. Why are you pursuing the martial arts at all? Just as a workout, self defense, just wanna kick some ass. Just curious.
