Is it bad to drink a protein shake before bed?

My boyfriend is drinking protein shakes before bed and I have told him that he'll never loose any weight doing that shit. He could definately stand to loose a few around the waste but he works out everyday and we eat pretty well. Is this bad for him to do??:(

When i'm trying to lose bodyfat, I use a 0 carb protein, such as Pure Pro or Ion X so I don't have to hane the extra carbs floating around, looking for a fat cell to jump into!

i drink a heavy shake before bed because if i dont ill wake up and feel that my body just ate all of the muscle i have.

I always drink a low carb protein shake right before bed. You body is going the whole night with out food so I have one before bed and one right when I get up before breakfast.

Is this a sign you might need to relax a little? I have an IV setup near my bed filled with a whey protein shake with a minor amount of carbs. It is set to dispense 30 grams of protein every 90 minutes.

Oh wait, no that was a dream I had. And that wasn't an IV, it was a chick. And what was happening every 90 minutes was...nevermind.

What was the question? Are you serious? Yes, he will kill himself if he takes a protein shake right before bed. Or at least I can promise you this, he will die. Sometime.

whether your goals are to gain or lose in order to do it in a efficient way you should always eat before laying to rest.a low to zero carb, high protien shake or meal is ideal at this time. lean towards whole food meats or slowly absorbed protien powders.you want your body to fast for as little time as possible while sleeping.by avoiding whey and other quikly absorbed protiens at this time you facilitate a slow steady absorption of protien through the majority of your sleeping hours. this is neccassary to efficiently facilitate fatloss while preserving muscle mass when on a restricted calorie regimen.peace, fly

it depends on the calorie content, a low cal protein shake is fine. remember, he needs protein to gain muscle mass and the more muscle mass he has the higher his metabolism wil be and he'll lose more fat

thanks for all the information guys....

OH YEA, to Mr. Longhorn or whatever it is with the comment about the girl and the IV. Maybe you should "relax a little" When you guys are constantly asking us "are we too fat, are my muscles big enough" Is it bad for me to be drinking this at night before I go to bed??? Guys are JUST as bad if not WORSE than girls, so with that being said. TO ALL THE GUYS THAT GAVE ME USEFUL!!!!!! INFORMATION IT IS TRULY!!! appreciated!!!

and I think that if you don't see a post you like you shouldn't respond because the way people take things aren't usually the way the were intended.

Does he like to stretch out while sleeping. Protein shakes ussually give off bad gas, he may want the bed to himself. Check into it.

lol, sorry, but I do things for my own amusement. And my post was much wittier than any other post here. And it did answer your question, even though to get to the answer, you would have had to use your brain.

And if you don't want a response you can't handle, then you shouldn't post to begin with.

Your post amuses me, lol.

hahahaha. I think Mr. Longhorn just spunked his personal protien shake on your face girly.

rotfl :D

I usually have a low carb shake right around 10:00pm. I've had no probs with it.

On a serious note boys, and girl, I don't think there is any literature out there that proves that protein intake before sleep reduces protein catabolism. What keeps weight is a positive balance of nutrients in the body, what loses weight is a negative balance of nutrients in the body. What keeps the body healthy is healthy food intake. You are what you eat, so keep it clean and your body will respond by hanging on to that hard earned muscle. If a protein shake just before bed brings your daily food intake just above the maintainance level, you will prevent loss of muscle. However, I maintain that the same could be acheived by eating that same amount of calories and stopping 5 hours before bed, you'd just be really hungry, and pissed off before bed. The most important thing is to eat clean, and well balanced, the body isn't designed to take in 500 grams of protein/day and it simply can't digest all that, but trying will tax your body, and make you feel shitty.

just my .02

Cheers.

Like what stang said, drinking a protein shake is anabolic to the body as sleeping means fasting for more than 8 hours. The amino acids consumed can combat the catabolic cortisol levels which rises during the last few hours of sleep and when we first wake up.

You should subscribe to Physical magazine or a health journal which constantly features clinical studies supporting the habit of taking protein shakes before bedtime for muscle anabolism.

Try taking in some dietary fiber from some sort of vegetables (broccoli, etc.), and some Essential fatty acids like Flax, canola, or peanut butter with this protein shake. They will help slow down absorption and ensure for a longer period of nutrients/amino acids to be taken up by the body while you are asleep and fasting. Also, as blood glucose levels decline, so does protein synthesis. You may want to add some kind of low-moderate GI carbs to add in with this meal. I like to use my daily amount of fructose at this time because of its really slow digestion rate/GI (really small amount of like 20 grams of all-natural applesauce). As long as you are not eating more than you are using for the day, then fat gain will be minimal. Also, some people get better results from eating whole protein foods (chicken, beef, fish) or cottage cheese at this time because of their very long digestion rates.

Mike Mattarrazo

I read that Mike Mattarrazo sets an alarm to wake up in the middle of the night to not drink a shake, but to actually eat. He gets out of bed like a friggin sleep walking robot, mows down some steak and some potatoes and goes back to bed. That guy truly is a FREAK!!!

I am a really hard training man but I am not able to put on weight. I eat like a horse an every evening I drink a bulk shake just before I went to bed. I don't have any problem with it. It's a shake with 800 kcal. Very rich off carbs and prot. but my B.F. is only 6%. When you want to lose weight I would suggest a low carb shake rich of prot. GO FOR IT!!!!!!!

sorry to say this but I also use to drink a shake before bed and I got FAT!!! then i stopet and lost body fat look much better now

its good to take in some protein right before bed because you have a lot of hours were ure not going to eat cause you're sleeping. however U don't need to take a shake 2 glasses of milk is enough if U cant afford to drink shakes every night of course the shake is the better alternative.
