CKD & low-thyroid??

jnuts

Can low-thyroid keep one out of ketosis? I have low-normal thyroid and low test. got my blood tests back yesterday. I'm female,140 lbs. age 38. Been following CKD for almost a week to the tee, I do cardio first half of the week and weights 3-4 days per week. Why am I not in ketosis yet?? the only thing I thought that could effect it is splenda in my 2 cups of coffee in the a.m.\

imo a low carb diet is the last thing you want to be doing at the moment!i recomend an isocaloric diet p,c,f 40-30-30 for example.i'd say get in all your fat from efas and pleanty greens.also, you might benefit from fructose early on in the day.

Mrs. J-nuts:

IMO, with respect to your question, there should be no evidence to support low test/low Thyroid panel not allowing you to enter ketosis.

Re-check your diet???

Are you using ketostix? they`re not always accurate.

You say you have low thyroid.Dieting with a negative calorie deficit drops these levels even lower, even more so with a low carb diet. When people do keto they lose fat at a decent rate to start with then after a few months leptin ,metabolism etc plummet 2 an all time low hence why they have 2 take a week off from dieting.Btw the carb up wont cut it for you.Maybe you should take time out then come back with a iso caloric diet plan.If you have your mind set on the keto diet and your a firm believer in the "calories in calories vs out thing" ditch the week off to raise yout thyroid and u'll see for yourself.Hey btw the ketostix r a waste of money,ma\ny factors interfere with the readings, water intake, activity levels etc.im kinda rambling on abit aint i?.wait for an expert to help u out hehe.

well less carbs would mean less t4 ------->t3 conversion

You're absoultely correst bro and I took this into consideration when assessing her objective and I STILL hold fast to the belief that a low carb regimine achieving ketosis should be attainable!!!!

Mic79: ALL good insightful comments/thoughts..........but you may have misinterptreted her original interest:

She will be doing a carb-up period (CKD) and IMO this will enable thiyroid function as well as periods of ketosis to a feasible endeavor. Had she said: low carb regimine ONLY (no carb-up), I would have agreed. In addition to this, leptin levels can bre manipulated thru diet within a relatively short period of time (good and bad) so again.........IMO, the carb-up periods should be adequate for their goals w/o Leptin interfering.

I will attest to the fact that MAINTENANCE calorioes derived from a isometric regimine........would be much more favorable as well as healthier. But currenty----her objective is to lose weight. So my answer focus on this as a priority.

:)

Keep in mind, when dieting w/o the use of manipulative hormones or sub-category hormones(Thyroid,Leptin, Testosterone, cortisol, insulin, glucagon, and many many others) several things WILL suffer to a degree (including the respective hormones) however the overall caloric decrease will still enable the subject to lose weight...........but this NEVER comes w/o sacrificing muscle and changing hormone homeostatsis!!!
