I've been hitting the gym hard 5 to 6 times a week for the last 8 to 9 weeks. A few different friends suggest that I should take a few days off if not even a whole week, to let my body rest an recover , then when I go back Illd be surprised at how much more I can lift an do. What's everyone's thoughts please ?

Monday push, Tuesday legs, Wednesday pull, Thursday off, Friday off, repeat. Or work out Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You need rest to build muscle. Best to have atleast 72 hours between working the same muscle. Also SL 5*5 is good its full body Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Post up your actual routine with rest days and all and someone here will be able to help. You may be fine or you may be over training.

If your making progress every day then tell your friends to fuck off. If you havent been progressing your probably overtrained and undereating.

No harm taking a week off for recovery after around 12 weeks of training 5-6 days per week. I love the first day back after a week off.

^^^^^ this
this topic comes up a lot in discussion with my real life peeps and I always contend that if you need to go daily for stress relief..like its your own private zone or need to go almost daily to not be derailed...tell people to screw off but if you hit a wall to break up the routine so that you have at least 48 hrs between muscle groups which Im not a fan of otherwise..I'm not a guy but I don't train say triceps and biceps on different days
I think trying to isolate muscles is counterproductive but think its beneficial if youre an every day gym goer which Im not
I go about 4 times a week (sometimes only 3) and do upper and lower body splits with back on leg days chest on arm days

Yeah like others have said, if you eat enough, rest properly, train hard and are still making progress...MILK IT TO ITS FULLEST. But if you feel like mentally you are drained, you could have an "easy week" in which you back off either the volume or the weight.
But seriously, overtraining is hard to do for a majority of lifters unless they're hardcore dieting.
