Being a parent of a baby

Being a prepubescent boy sucks. Having an older brother REALLY sucks, because all older brothers treat their little brothers like shit.

Do the reverse of what you would think you should do, seriously. Give him tasks that require him to be responsible for his actions, with clear cut consequences for success/failure, and leave him to the work, don't hover. Give him an opportunity to prove himself, some way to start working towards adulthood that sets him apart from the older kid, and something that gets him positive attention.

C'mon man, think like a kid. Remember what it's like being a boy that age, what does cockiness really cover for? Insecurity, lack of confidence. And being a loose cannon is usually a bad way to get parental attention, because any attention is better than being lost in the shuffle.

Not quite.

Translation: MuscleMom just gave SB for free what she spent $45 a week for nearly 3 years to learn to do with her own kid.

Great advice from MM.
Just go with what works Cindylou. I think you are doing or trying to do too much, and you are over analyzing every little detail. You can't do that, you'll drive yourself insane.

Step back, relax, take a deep breath, and look at what a beautiful healthy child you have. Cause in the end, that's all that matters.

best advice I ever got was when my second was a baby and had colic

endless screaming for three weeks

the peditrician asked if she was ill, no
was she too hot or too cold, no
did she have a clean diaper, yes
fed and burped and not gassy? yes
had enough baby activities and all soothing methods tried..yes

put her in the crib, complaining or not, shut the door, walk outside and take 5 minutes to yourself
rinse repeat to cope
before I catch shit for letting her cry unattended, she seriously only slept for 20 minutes at a time for the colicky crap and the rest of the time she was passed off every three hrs to someone else so no one went insane and you got a chance to get SOME sleep, eat, shower etc....

theres no manual for kids...it was said before...every kid is different and what works one day may not work the next
dont second guess yourself (overly) and screw anyone elses rules beyond love then and keep them safe/healthy

Damned good advice, actually. I did the same thing on a few occasions with my own a few times. Sometimes the choice is walk away and catch your breath, or take them by the ankles and bash their heads against the wall. Since the latter is not the option of a sane person, you need to find some way to revive your sanity.

Cindy, what we're all trying to tell you is that parenting is the hardest job on the planet, and never forget, there is not ONE person on earth alive now or ever, whose ever done the job perfectly.

only colicky for 3 weeks eh? consider yourself lucky. mine was colicky for the entire first year.
this is good advice however.
parenting a baby was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. hands down.
even so, I would really like to do it all again. :)
