No. 2 Connecticut (0-0) at Pepperdine (0-0) 11:30 pm EST

MALIBU, California (Ticker) -- Jim Calhoun begins his 20th season at Connecticut when the second-ranked Huskies begin the campaign Friday with their second-ever visit to Pepperdine.

Inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in September, Calhoun won his 700th game last season and is in the top 20 in career victories among Division I coaches. He led the Huskies to a 23-8 mark and a share of the Big East regular season title with Boston College.

Senior Rashard Anderson averaged nearly 12 points last season and needs four to reach 1,000. The Huskies also return Big East Defensive Player of the Year Josh Boone and Freshman of the Year Rudy Gay.

Two Connecticut players - A.J. Price and Marcus Williams - were each charged with four counts of felony larceny in August for their alleged role in a case involving stolen laptop computers. Calhoun suspended Price for the season and Williams through January 3.

The Huskies open with a non-tournament road game for the first time since the 1984-1985 season. They posted a 63-60 victory in their last trip to Pepperdine on January 2, 1988 and have won both meetings.

Waves coach Paul Westphal lost five players from last year's 17-14 squad, which finished fifth in the West Coast Conference.

Sophomore guard Kingsley Costain averaged 7.4 points last season and is the top scorer among returning players for Pepperdine. Freshman forward Willie Galick averaged 11.5 points in two exhibition contests.
