Why doesn't some guys drink water during workout?

i sweat gallons, so i must replace it or else i'll be a shriveled mess crawling along the floor.

OK maybe that`s why I`m crawling up the steps after training. I never drink during workouts and My Tshirt always ends up soaked. STUPID STUPID STUPID.

IWILL change my ways. It`s amazing how one can get so caught up in the details and forgets about the simple things.

my reason for the way i drink

i drink plenty before and after a workout, but almost never during a workout (for up to an hour) mostly because i have this crazy idea that i can train my body to hydro-regulate.

its a totally unscientific concept, and one i would not recommend to anyone who doesn't research and take responsibility for their own bodies, but for me, i noticed back when i was a tub o lard that if i drank lots of water, i perspired plenty too. i would always carry around that little bottle of water and always tend to over-hydrate myself.... that sucked because i already go to the restroom like 15 times a day (no im not a diabetic, nor do i have a medical condition, trust me, i've looked into it all my life, that's just how much water I drink and my bladder is a bit smaller than normal) and drinking more only added to that.

a few times while i worked out (i spend 80% of my time on aerobic workouts, for about 10 hours a week), i forgot my water... scary thought, but what it caused me to do (because of the fear of heatstroke and dehydration) is it caused me to work out close to water coolers (in case i needed it), and listen to my body for signs of thirst.... yes, it could be considered reckless, but i told myself that as long as i didn't feel woozy, and as long as i didn't suffer negative effects afterwards, i was probably allright.

i noticed though that my need for hydration was actually quite a bit less than was "advertised" to me. i noticed that if i drank plenty (not in one big gulp, but gradually) of water (like 16 oz) and drank plenty afterwards and kept my sodium/potassium intake a bit above normal, that i could work out without needing but 8-10 oz of water...at most

i also noticed a few more things:

1. my body temperature rises much more slowly if i don't drink too much water - i have a cool thermometer that i carry with me to workouts (im anal about measuring my metabolism) and i noticed that if i worked out and drank lots of water, my temperature would rise to 105 within 5 minutes (given a workout at 90% max heartrate) which would limit the amount of time i could exert myself at that level.

conversely, if i came to the track hydrated, and ran at the same pace, it took at least 10-12 minutes before my body temperature rose to the same level, and i noticed that with a trickle of water (necessary if you are trying to run for hours), i could keep my 90%max pace for up to an hour (quite a feat for a beginner like me). but to keep it that long, i admit i drank about 8 oz of water throughout the run, but only like a spoonful-sized amount every 5 minutes or so.

2. Resistance exercises were tricky because for some reason, i tended to feel super-thirsty after a hard leg-day, but i noticed that i didn't sweat much, and it seemed more like "dry lips," so I drank just tiny bits (enough to wet my lips) and again, i noticed that i didn't need as much. although i would consider myself a beginner on the squats, i can definitely squat till i puke, and i noticed that drinking almost no water made it much less likely for me to puke, which indicated that my threshhold was much higher if i drank a little less...

3. I also noticed that my nutritional deficit (im on a diet) wouldn't haunt me as badly if i drank less. what i mean is being on a diet of about 1500 calories and working out about 2 hours a day, you sometimes feel like absolute shit a couple of hours after the workout because your body is recoiling from the lack of food and the grueling exercise session. well, for some reason, if i drank more water, i felt worse than if i drank less. for me, less depended on my workouts, such as my weekly 90% run (the one above) was 8oz, for most less grueling workouts, i typically only needed about half of that.

maybe the real point here is to very carefully listen to your body and not just shuck water at it thinking that you can never have too much water.... sometimes i really think that in the frenzy to avoid dehydration, many may actually induce hyponatremia, which can be rarely fatal, but in a lesser extent, the cause of much discomfort after a workout.... again, im not a scientist yet and although im guessing some research has been done, it's early in the morning so i didn't have time to research it, but i am guessing that carefully balancing your water needs (which to some may mean drinking less) may be a useful strategy to consider.... and never forget that your results will probably vary from mine (maybe yours will be completely contradictory to mine, but if you listen to your body, you are ahead of the game)

I also was sold on the idea because the last time i signed up for the L.A. Marathon, i noticed the top 50 runners didn't drink more than maybe 32 ounces in 2.5 hours of running (i spoke to a few finishers and "veterans" on this).... it seems that one of the best places to find out about water use, dehydration, proper hydration and hyponatremia is in marathons, triathlons, and other grueling long-distance aerobic activities... and what i noticed was that your most experienced athletes, the elites, didn't drink gallons (like what i would see some poor folks do in the marathon), but rather drank very small sips, and drank regularly....

so I drink smart, and listen to my body, and use potassium/sodium supplements (for sodium i just use salt), and just in case I need it, plenty of water (but its rare that i need much)....

oh, and hot weather will definitely increase need, how much? i don't know ... for me, i drink about 20-25% more on average

Great explanation. Good for you for knowing your needs. I wish I can be that sensitive to my body`s needs. damn. karma to you

Oh my god, I can't imagine not drinking water between sets on leg days. I carry a bottle with me around the gym.

Water on leg days would be the worst! :)

I can picture water comming out my nose as I straighten out of a squat!

I drink about a litre as well... just a habit to sip the bottle ALL the time... you'd be surprised how quickly it takes to drink that...
