FYI - check the women's board for other "chick" related stuff...

I was told to train according to your goals, not your gender. I prefer the compound lifts (squat, dl, and recently Olympic Lifts :)) because:

a) you burn a TON of calories and
b) they are fun to do!

BTW, I like "Oxygen" magazine better than "Shape" or the typical girlie fitness mags...mainly for the pics of the hotties for motivation, but like in any magazine, there is a lot of contradictory information in it. You'll want to take those ideas to someone (or somewhere like here) to research further.

Okay everyone is telling me to get her to train with me or do the same things that I do. That's great and I would love to teach her the 5x5 routine. Her fear and concern is getting all big and bulky. She doesn't want to gain muscle size just be completely toned. Can 5x5 do just that tone and not bulk. Is that naturally going to happen since she's a girl? I know that girls don't have the testosterone naturally to build large muscles the way that men do, but when she thinks of a girl lifting weights she thinks of the big girls on roids or even some of the fitness model girls that are now getting a little to big even for my taste. Will 5x5 or a guy routine keep her lean and tone without bulking her up?

that is the biggest misconception among people (mainly girls just wanting to get into shape) who i train. Tell them this, they can lift little weights and rep for ever and it will be a long and tiedious process to reach her goal. or have her train like this. Train like she is trying to be ms olympia or rebecca swanson. In other words train like a prize fighter who is behind schedule. then when you reach your goal, switch to maitenece. so hurry to your goal, then just relax. Beside amoung the big three......... lifting, eating, and rest. eating is the biggest determinent on getting big. if she doest eat like an offseason bodybuilder or powelifter then she will not get massive.

i wish walking into a gym and lifting heavy all of a sudden made you huge, then everyone would do it.

here is the question? how many of you have woken up and said "oops, guess i grew too much...didnt see that coming." if the workout is intense she's going to burn calories, is she's eating below or at maintenance, she'll get stronger, maybe eek out some muscle growth, but overall just have a tough workout.

as was said before, diet will dictate if she has the building blocks to grow from hard training, not training alone dictating whether she grows.

find something enjoyable thats challenging and not intimidating, you can get on with the real heavy stuff once form is established and confidence is gained.
