small wrists hurting your training?

Deviance,
There are differing opinions on using support equipment just as there are on any topic. The rational of not using straps or gloves or belts for that matter goes something like this. If you use a piece of equipment to support part of your body, you will be come dependent upon it. I have even seen studies that indicate a weakening of the area(s) supported by these devices because of their use. I personally believe this is true, and further that you should not use any support devices unless there is impending damage due to the exercise/actions being performed.

Like I said earlier, I do not find a need for the use of gloves or straps, but that is because I am stretching, warming up and maintaining proper form throughout the exercise(s). If you do things in the proper order, with proper form you should have no troubles. Personally, it is not worth the dependence upon a device to forgo strengthening part of my body.

Hope this helps,
MJ

Agreed! :)

I used to have relatively skinny wrists and a weak grip. Then I started doing heavy dumbell shrugs without straps. I've slowly worked up to using the heaviest dumbells in the gym (140). Now I can hold those bastards forever.

i was just at wal-mart, and in they sporting goods section by the weights they had a forearm exerciser for $10. after taking it out of the box and trying it, i must say it works pretty damn good. i think one of these would definately help you guys out

Since I started using wrist wraps(not straps)my poundages on certain exercises have gone up. For instance, on close grip bench press I used to have to quit before failure because my wrists felt like they were going to snap. My muscles could handle the weight, but at that position my wrists were at a severe disadvantage. Same thing with weighted dips...
