Powering your Punches, is it a correct way?

I am trying to getting more power in my punches by the following method: First 1. dumbbell in the position of hammer curls that is as if you are ready to punch. 2. Push the dumbbell in a quick pace like punching with a rod in the hand while squeezing your muscles. 3. when return to original position use a slow pace to gain more power. Is it the correct way????
Hey Bro,
No it isn't the right way!The power in your punch comes from a number of factors - correct form, body mechanics, staying as relaxed as possible (to prevent tensing antagonistic muscles)while punching, punching with your body as a whole and lots more. A good place to learn a ton about punching and martial Arts in general is this site :Martial Arts Books and Ebooks. And no it's not mine it's just good practical Martial Arts instruction. Sign up and theres tons of free stuff. Find the "Punch Papers" I think it's called and get it. Well worth it and will answer your questions. If it doesn't answer all of your qustions ,write to the Author and he will!
Good luck. The best way to use weight training is to train all of your muscle groups, esp with moves that use muscles in groups like cleans, push presses etc, THEN separatly learn how to punch correctly and practice like hell!

Bass Rutten is one of the greatest punchers of all time. Watch the leg squat, curl, and uncurl, not to mentiion the inverted fist.

It's the snap of a punch that gets the knock out. If you want to be able to drop a person forget about punching with weights. Acceleration is the key.

Start punching with speed and flexibility. Your aim is to have your fist (or hand) hit the person before they get a chance to anticipate and tense up their abdomen and neck. If you hit them before they can prepare, you accelerate their head to the side very quickly...which rattles the brain and gets the knockout.

The same goes with body punches. At one time or another we have all stood there and let someone hit us in the stomach to see what we could take. The thing is, you were tensed up and ready. If you want to do damage, you must get that punch in there FAST before they can prepare. Then they are not tensed up and your impact goes past the muscles into the organs and hurts like hell.

What you lack in power, speed will make up the difference.

I learned this first hand and then started using it myself. You want to kind of "twitch" that fist out there very quickly. After you get that speed motion built into your punches, THEN work on adding in the power without taking down the speed.

You do this by getting your legs, hips, back and shoulders in the right position. I have knocked out a guy much bigger than me by snapping it out there fast enough.

Power is rooted in the feet and flows through the whole body. As a kid my friends dad was a boxer and I learned valuable lessons in the back yard. Then my sifu helped me connect my body to it.

Think of a towel snapping....it don't weigh much...but it hurts like hell because of the speed. Learn to add some SNAP to your punches and you will be dropping mofos before they knew what happened.
