New squat question?

Got into a discussion about my butt with my S/O today and seems he thinks my butt is round except at the bottom (no pun intended) where it seems to be square. Anyway, do you girls think that ATF squats would target that particular area enough to maybe round it out a lil bit? The part I am talking about is where alot of women have saddlebags or "smilies" from tanning. Please help me out here as I am beginning to develop a complex about my butt being 1) flat and 2) square.

BTW, I have not been able to train for almost 4 weeks now because of illness and injury from auto accident but plan on resuming my training tomorrow a.m.

What is your squat form like now? Is your rear like that due to fat or the shape of the muscle? Any chance you could just poke your SO's eyes out? ;)

Personally, I think deadlifts create the best butts. Especially on men. *temporary mental digress, picturing a certain man deadlifting*

Seriously, try incorporating some deadlifts and romanian deadlifts (RDLs) in your program - your butt will love you. After my first contest diet cycle, my butt looked quite flat - I guess there was more fat there than I thought. :-) I've been doing RDLs and DLs consistently, and have a much better shaped derriere.

LOL! YOu girls are hilarious! Basically, I had started doing ATF squats specifically for booty building. But it seems that although I feel some muscle soreness afterwards in the glutes, I feel more in my hammies and quads. I do know that about 2 weeks after incorporating ATF squats late last year, I could see my jeans and other slacks fitting differently in the derriere. Possibly some "perkiness"? As for fat and muscle tissue in that area, would it really be possible to develop a round butt muscle, as in actually changing the shape? Maybe the deadlifts might make a difference, however I always feel DLs in erectors and hammies more so than glutes. What are romainian deadlifts? Any videos out there demonstrating?

I wouldn't want to poke out my boyfriends eyes cause they are just too gorgeous and I always melt when I look into them. I geuss that is why he can get away with saying something as tacky as what he said. I am such a sucker!:p

Forgot to mention, my bodyfat is hovering aroun 19-20%, so might that be another contributor to a "square" butt appearance?

Work on your body for yourself, not some SO who might not always be there. I bet he has a few areas that could use improvement!

I just recently (within the last three months?) incorporated squats (such as they are! :D ) and deadlifts into my routine. I have to say that these really have made a difference.

I also do pull-throughs and must say that I (at least) really feel these in the glutes and hams, but perhaps that has to do with stance?

Hmmm... if she can't, can we? Don't you love how men are trying to be "helpful"? "But honey you asked me to be honest!" UGH.

:lmao:

square butts

to get that rounder-heart shaped butt you need to add lunges/ SLDLs... hitting only squats cuases the glutes to become overdeveloped-- resulting in a square ass-- not a round one.

(Ooops, missed another pic)
I don't think so! Sounds like tabloid physiology.

Seriously, I think genetics plays the biggest role in muscle shape, before and after development. My guess is the square look has more to do with the BF% and the lack of development in general of the muscle UNDER it.

nice booty shot :)

I agree that BF% & geneticsplay a role in butt shape... & even tho squats def fill out a flat/ square ass-- you should add lunges, SLDLs, cable kickbacks, hyperextensions...

the goal is not to just add size-- but contour the muslce...

Yeah, I'll leave that pretty work up to takiniteasy, I'm just trying to squat 500 by June. :)

I hit 200 on my squats a few months back & got a little hernia out of it... so please be careful!!

I'm casting my vote for poking his eyes out.

For god's sake, don't get a complex about your butt or your body fat percentage. Squats will do you a lot of good, but they may not fulfill your (or your boyfriend's) fantasy of the perfect butt.

Some people just have rounder cheeks than others. My butt is more curvy and higher than it was before I started lifting, but it's never going to be round b/c I don't have the "round butt" gene - my sister got that one. She's had that bubble butt since she was born - probably never did a heavy squat a day in her life.

Speaking of pull-throughs - I did some this morning, and you're right, 2Shy - they definitely hit the glutes as well as the hammies. It's that squeeze at the top, baby!

I'm so glad there was no one in the gym though - pull-throughs can be a little obscene looking.

RDLs are similar to SDLs, only they focus on the hammies and glutes and pretty much leave the lower back out of the picture. You do them with an arched back and slightly bent knees, so when you lower the weight, you shouldn't be able to extend much past your knees (unless you're super flexible). As you raise the weight, you thrust your hips forward and tighten the glutes. They are my favorite ass developer!

Squats are great too, but you have to sit back and break parallel. If you're leaning forward over your knees, you're going to hit the quads more than the hammies and glutes. If you're doing a wide stance, you're using abductors just as much as hammies, so you're really getting nice leg development - as you can tell from Spatts.

Great butt shot, Spatts!

I'll give a thumbs-up to RDLs as well. I used to do SLDLs and just switched over to RDLs for my past few leg workouts and OMG...my butt hurts for three days afterwards! Its a great, great feeling!

But once again, "development" doesn't necessarily produce a certain butt shape. My ass is NEVER, EVER, EVER going to look like BronzedGoddess'.

Well, maybe it will if I go see this guy.

Thanks for all the response. I have developed great legs due to squats but my bootay just doesn't seem to respond as well. I keep wondering about butt implants. Nah! Dont need them that bad. However I am going to try the RDLs and pull throughs that have been mentioned. Uh, maybe dumb question but are pull throughs done with cables? I actually dont think I have ever done them or seen them done for that matter.
Anyone care to elaborate?

God, what I would do to have a butt like Spatts!

Oh boy, that's what I thought they looked like. Hope I can get to the gym when it is void of guys in order to try these out.

Spatts, you are so damned funny! And you have a deal. I will take half anyday and then you can make weight!;)

Thanks again for the responses! You guys are great!

I LOVE pull-throughs. I don't care WHO'S in the gym when I do them, or even if it means staring at someone's ass (someone doing tri pushdowns on the other cable) while I do them.

Genetically flat booty

I can relate to the flat, squarish butt. My butt has a flat shape genetically. I have been doing squats, deadlifts and RDL for years and have been able to shape shift my derriere quite a bit. It is definitely rounder and more lifted. I am pleased with the progress. It will never look like the famous spatts booty :p but I'm ok with the rear that I have. I noticed in the last year or two I have really learned to fire the muscle I am targeting quite intensely, which is producing better results. When you do ATF squats, you should be really holding the glutes throughout the ROM of the exercise.
My motto is to Make the best of what God gave you and then be satisfied.

W6, do you care to repost a pic of a truly "muscular" butt, so we can all see just how square the glutes can be?

You know, I am okay with what I got to a certain extent. I am always looking to perfect and if I think I can do it I certainly give 200% trying.

I second the motion to repost pic of the muscular butt. W6, pretty please?

I think Takniteasy should post a pic - I've never seen a square butt before. I think your SO is pulling your leg.

Beautiful woman, strong legs and butt, but it's still flat... I can't find any pics of her from the back, so I can't attest to "squareness."

MsBeverlyHills - I go quite heavy on RDLs - right now I'm at 215 for 4x5s - I'll bump it another 5 or 10 lbs. my next workout. Since the range of movement is limited more than the range of movement in the SDL, you should be able to go heavier. I was only doing about 185 lbs. when I used to SDL.

Takeniteasy - I have to post this suggestion Danielle Edwards had in the March issue of Oxygen. She learned this at a fitness training camp - you do 500 - 700 lunges a day, six days a week, for eight to 10 weeks. It will give you a "really lean, tight package". Too bad you ruined your joints in the process. And died of boredom. I wish these fitness models would quit giving out advice.

Ms. BeverlyHills, I never welcomed you to the boards, did I?

My apologies.

You remind me of someone who used to post here.

JJ....lmao. What are the chances that Edwards even said that.

I would post a pic but I just aint got the guts to. I mean, the rest of my booty is round except at the very bottom, where instead of the roundness continuing, it is straight across and from side view is basically flat. However, my BF did say when I bent over, I looked great!:p Course he was only trying to make up for the tacky words.

I really, really appreciate all the responses however I am having to curtail my weight training for a short (I hope) time due to an auto accident injury. Just a lil nerve damage that takes some time and TLC to resolve.
