Just went in for my yearly physical and my body is not what it used to be..

my cholesterol levels are out of whack and my bp is high.. {I have been natural for over a year now btw}

total cholesterol is 250-- supposed to be under 200
hdl is fine 59 supposed to be over 40
LDL 156 supposed to be under 100

BP running around 130 oner 90 but will get up to 140 over 96 at times

My trainng and diet have been in the dump for the last year, new job and ALOT of travel, so my bodyfat is up my strength and stamina down

my question to you guys is--- my doc wants to put my on hydrochlorothiazide to help get rid of excess sodium and water for bp--and zocor for cholesterol--- I think that is jumping the gun just want others opinions

have any of you ever had similar numbers when clean? and were you able to get them back to normal without meds?

What otc supps can be taken to help?

stats and history early 30s 6ft about 190-195 now no idea on bf, but higher then i want it, i would guess 18-20% and thats up from around my normal 10-12%

Thanks in advance bros..

You're in your early 30's and that asshole wants to put you on meds for numbers that are only borderline high? Especially without recommending that you try modifying diet and exercise first? That's bullshit!

Well you admitted that your diet is in the dump, so obviously you know what needs to change. But they are people that are lead to believe that cholesterol numbers sometimes can't change with diet and exercise. That is a total crock of shit. That may be true in 1% of all cases, but that is horse shit. I digress.

The most surefire way to bring that LDL down and raise HDL is following a low carb/high fat diet. This has been proven time and time again. Also fat and saturated fat DO NOT raise cholesterol in any significant amounts. They also boost HDL more than raising LDL so the benefit is actually better than any negative aspect of this.

But the ultra low carb portion really only needs to be about 2 weeks long to let your body adapt to that quicker.

So you stay at under 20 grams for two weeks and then slowly build back up. Honestly Atkins and South Beach are really right on the money for this.

Then for every normal day living just stay under about 100 grams of carbs per day. You will look and feel 100 times better.

I slashed 100 points off my total cholesterol in 8 weeks by adapting a carb conscious eating style. It went from 229 to 138 in 8 weeks. My HDL went from 39 to 49 in those 8 weeks also.

There is an article in Men's Health about saturated fat not being bad for you. Try a google search for it.

Also the works by Jeff Volek, Cassandra Forsythe, Johnny Bowden, Charles Poliquin and many others support low carb for not only health benefits, but athletic performance.

Some supps that can help are high dose flush-free Niacin. At prescription doses that has been proven to raise HDL. Also red yeast rice and pycnogenol may have benefits of lowering LDL.

But nothing will lower LDL quicker and more effectively than lower carb. In addition your BP will be stellar following that kind of a diet.

You will find you can actually eat more calories that way and still lose bodyfat and have more energy after you adapt to the lower carbs.

If you keep your fat HIGH - and that is key - you won't get headaches or be moody like everyone claims.

Do it right and anyone that claims bullshit on low carb diets is still stuck by brainwashing of decades of high carb low fat benefits.

One of the big mistake is people just drop their carbs and don't raise the fat intake. That's not how it works. The other misconception is that you eat less than 20 grams of carbs per day and never eat fruit or vegetables. After the primer faze that is completely untrue. As a matter of fact, the proper low carb diet would have you eating more fruits and veggies than most anyone else.

Anyway, the proof is out there and is overwhelming for those who actually choose to READ it. So I won't try and shove any more of this down your throats.

Fuck the meds though bro. The answer is simple and right there for you.

That's a lot of general, broad stroke, information.... I agree with most of it.

However, I lived on lettuce and water for 6 months and my cholesterol did not come down.

I tried everyrhing in the book regarding diet, excercise, supplements.
None of it worked.

Finally, with great hesitation, I went on Vytorin, a statin drug, within 90 days my numbers were perfect. No sides.

There are WAY more than 1% of the population that have genetic cholesterol
issues that need medical attention.

I agree that you should try everything you can to lower your lipid panel to the desirable levels... But don't rule out the statin drugs as horse shit.

Agreed. It's not that bad. Get back on track with training and diet. Take apple pectin, primrose oil, policostonol and red rice yeast. Try to avoid stress. You'll be okay bro. Feel better.
