My uncle answered the door wearing nothing but a diaper...

You should seriously think about suggesting nursing home care for your uncle, or at the very least, home health aide services. That kind of constant care will kill your grandma. :(
They have a girl come in once a week and help bathe him and clean the house.

Gosh, though, a bath only once a week? My goodness!

I can imagine my grandma feels overwhelmed. My mom used to live in the trailer behind her house (on the same land) and used to make all their meals and help my grandma take care of my uncle and my grandpa. However, my mom died of cancer in December 2005 and pa paw died only a few weeks later. So, now no one helps her except my uncle who is the minister takes her to the grocery store once a week.

I would like to do so many things for her because she has been the rock in my life. However, I feel overwhelmed. She needs so much help. She needs a new bathtub and needs some plumbing work done. She needs help cleaning. My uncle really should be in a home. I just can't help these things too much. I could go see her more and help her clean I suppose....

No, you shouldn't feel guilty at all. It was a totally different situation when your mother (RIP:() and your grandpa (pa paw?) were alive to assist her. I can certainly understand and appreciate your grandma's devotion and committment to her child, but there's a point where it just cannot be managed.

Don't feel guilty, you have a child of your own and that's where your responsibilty lies. :)

Yeah, it is a weird cultural thing with people in the hills of Appalachian Kentucky that you just don't let family members go to rest homes. Sometimes it makes no sense because the loved ones would actually get better care if they were in a home because there is a qualified staff. That is probably the case with my uncle anyway. I think I will talk to her about it in some subtle way first and see what she says.

My mom made me promise her not to let her die in a hospital and I took care of her throughout her having cancer up until she died. I know first hand that everything takes a back seat when you have that situation at home. I really think that I looked like I aged 5-10 years over a one year period.

hahahahahaha...

Oh, by the way. I wanted some of my mom's things and my little sister had told me before that one of my uncles (the one who is a preacher) had come in without anyone's permission and given all of mom's things to charity.

Now, I come to find out that my sister has them all and now wants me to help get them back from her meth head ex-bf who threatened to beat me up. Great!

God, my family sucks.

Sounds pretty Whiskey Tango to me...

You'd think the uncle who is a minister could cajole some parishoners into volunteering some manpower to help the overwhelmed gramma.

I've been told he does a lot of charity work, this sounds like a case that would benefit from some good old fashioned Christian values.

Now don't go knocking his Christian values. He helps as much as he can too -- more than I do. People have lots of responsibilities and things pulling them in various directions.
