I don't really miss them - I mean that is the whole point of the stats is that people come and go to leave their marks.

I respect Ripken - but the first thing that popped into my head when he stepped to bat and hit the HR on the first pitch was that the pitcher/catcher/coach were just being nice and fed hit a fat fastball right down the center of the strike zone - that pitch sucked big time, and it isn't like the pitcher fucked up - this is the all star game with amazing pitchers (johnson had just left right so it was whoever was next - don't recall the dude - braves guy was it?).
anyway, it makes for good press if the dude leaving the game hits well...

I don't know - that was just what came to mind as soon as I saw it.
perhaps I'm just a conspiracy theorist at heart.

I had to read that three times to make sure what I read the first time was stupidity.

Did you see the HR contest? The pitches those guys were hitting were BP (batting practice) fastballs and I do believe Sammy Sosa got into his next round by hitting a grand total of 3 HR's and making 10 outs.....so out of 13 pitches he hit 3 out when the guy was laying them in there.

If you think for a minute a professional pitcher is just going to lay a cookie in there for Ripken to knock the shit out of you are crazy as hell. These guys don't get where they are without the competitive drive of a winner. By the way that "guy" that gave up that bomb was Chan Ho Park who is averaging better than a K per inning and has a 2.8 ERA and opponents are only hitting .191 off of him.

There is such a thing as rising to the occassion...... which Cal most certainly did.
