This and post workout are the only 2 times I can see a shake doing better then real food , simply because of the time to digest. If there's still a ton of food in your stomach while being very intense I'd see why u'd puke. Real Food takes time to digest so If you do that wait a few hours before workout
Now that I remember , they used to tell us not to eat before sprinting quarters...
