Grip training Captains of Crush #3? Anyone closed it?

New member
I was thinking about putting a 3 split routine for grip work. All of this info I got from either the Milo Journal (great publication), Fred Hatfields writings and EliteFitness members.

Day 1 , 3 ,5

Store bought gripers, warm up 45 reps.
Captions of Crush "T" 10 reps
CoC "1" 10 reps
C0C "2" as many as possibe.
CoC "T" reverse grip do as many as possible.

Finger exerciser , 2 finger and 1 finger for reps, 3 sets.

Day 2, 4, 6

Strap holds. <---- Heard these really help.

Pinch grip holds

Forearm Strengthener thinga -ma-jig 30 - 40 reps at # 3 setting
max reps at #5 setting, repeat for three sets.

I was also thinking about holding heavy weights in each hand for time.

Chinese exercise balls , rotate plam up, rotate palm sidways, rotate palm face down as many as possible befoer hand starts to cramp.

Finger plate curls <--- almost forgot about these gems.

And maybe event 3 -4 weeks on Day 7 an event...? AN Event you say...

From the Grip masters manuel, by Fred Hatfield.

Break a key (house or car key) with your thumbs.
2. Break (not just bend) a 60 penny nail, spent 3 hours looking for these things.
3. Crack one walnut open with your bare hand, specifically thumb and index finger.
4. Crush an apple in flight, someone throws you an apple and you crush it as you catch it.
5. Make your forearm muscles dance without moving any other muscle in your body, I would like to see a video of this being done.

or

In Mastery of Hand Strentgh also by Brookfield he has more challanges for you. (Thanks Got Help? for posting these)

1. Crush a RAW potato in your hand.
2. attach a towel to a bucket, fill it with 32. lbs of dirt or sand. Grab the towel and walk a full mile. Dont let the bucket touch you.
3. Tear a quater sized chunk off a full deck of plastic-coated playing cards.
4. *Be careful w/ this 1* Curl a 50-lb. plate
5. Bend a 60-penny nail behinf you back. You may want to wrap the nail in a towel or old shop rag.

Here is a link to some of what you can expect from Fred's grip books: http://www.ironmind.com/griptip.shtml Scroll through there are about 10 - 18 pages.

I'm doing this so I can get certified as having closed the Cptains of Crush #3 gripper and then go for #4 Only one person ever closed hte #4 gripper ( http://www.ironmind.com/grippers.shtml )

Captians of crush Grippers
T = Trainer @ 100 lb
No. 1 @ 140 lb
No. 2 @ 195 lb
No. 3 @ 280 lb
No. 4 @ 365 lb

I can close #2 with my right. I can almost do it with my left. Once a week, after ME squat/DL or DE squat/DL I will do:

T- 3x3
1- 3x3
2-10x1
2- 5 negatives. I squeeze it all the way with both, and then let go with one to see how long I can hold it. It tears your hands up pretty good.

I'm 1/8 inch from closing #3. Its so damn close it pisses me off:mad:

I closed #2 for 16 good reps but still no #3. I bought a #4 to do partials, and its amazing that its been closed by a human hand.

Since I can't deadlift anymore, my goal has been shifted to grip strength. I will close that damn #3 soon:mad:

:D

I can come VERY close...I think that I have closed the #2 for 10x with each hand before.

Good luck, looks like you'll have it any day now.
I just got the # 2 in yesterday.

Have you gotten a chance to look into steel bencding, I heard it's really good for overall strenght and awesome for hand strength.

Frustrating when you get that close isn't it b?

Para, I haven't checked out steel bending yet, but thats a good idea. This is pretty new for me. I just bought the COC's a couple months ago, and plan on getting Hatfield's book soon.

I got stale with the COC's so I stopped using them a week or so ago and I'll start again next week. Keep the board posted on your progress man, I'm always interested in hearing how others are doing with these damn things.

I've closed the number 3 completly I think 3 times total with my right hand and once with my left... Although I was supporting the top of the spring with my free hand... Which you can't do when being certified... My biggest problem is my hand size.. I have quite small hands.. The gripper is just barely on my fingertips when I close it...

Hatfield's books are great for developing hand strenght. Well worth the $$$

Take a look at http://www.ironmind.com/griptip.shtml they have tips from Hatfield, with pics. Be sure to hit the More button, lots of exercises, most from his books.

Wow, Congrat's. I have small hands too and I read that you can use your other hand to set up the gripper. Here are the official rules.

Captains of Crush® Grippers:
Rules for Closing

1. The gripper must be an authentic IronMind Enterprises Inc., Captains of Crush® Gripper.

2. The gripper cannot have been modified or tampered with in any way.

3. Chalk (magnesium oxide) may be used on the gripping hand, but rosin, tacky, etc. are specifically disallowed.

4. The free hand may be used to position the gripper in the gripping hand, but must then be removed, and must stay at least a foot from the gripping hand at all times during the squeeze. Similarly, nothing may be in contact with the gripping hand or the gripping arm from the elbow down (for example, the free hand is not allowed to steady the wrist of the gripping hand or hold the spring, etc.). At least the last inch of the squeeze must be clearly visible: the gripper cannot be closed while blocked from view and then turned and presented as already closed.

5. The gripper must be held with the spring facing up.

6. The handles must touch completely.

Wow, you guys are still working on the #3?? I do reps of 10 with my specialty made #7’s and #8’s. :D

lol...you da man then Ingram... And thanks for posting that info Para, I would like to get certified eventually when I can consistently close the #3.. Oh and as far as the my free hand touching the gripper, everytime i closed the #3 i had to keep it on the spring the entire close to prevent the gripper from basically rotating out of my hand.. Really sucks having such small hands, especially when deadlifting cause I can't even completly wrap my figers all the way around the bar to touch my hand.... So I can't, for now, hold on to anything over 700 pounds without the use of straps....
