My sister finally told me what her diet consists of, and I hit the freaking roof! It turns out to be less than 600 calories a day It makes me sick that people peddle this kind of crap, preying on other's desire to improve the way they look and feel. The diet basically consists of a protein with green vegies for 3 meals a day, 5 hours apart. No complex carbs. I felt sick as soon as I figured out the cals - I can't believe she's been able to stick to it. No wonder she's hungry.
Anyway, I asked her to PLEASE triple her intake, at least, and add in some oatmeal or brown rice, or sweet potato. I also told her she'd put on weight as soon as she does this, because her body has been starving, and thus has learnt to keep everything it can as fat, and also because of water retention. How MUCH, though, is she likely to put on before things stabilise?
She's engaged a personal trainer (thank god), and I think is ready to dump the diet and get more sensible. I don't think this is about ED - she just doesn't know anything about nutrition - she's never had to care. When we were younger, she could eat ANYTHING she wanted, anytime, and NEVER put on weight, nothing - she was always very active, and stayed slim and trim until she quit smoking last year, when suddenly she ballooned. I think she just didn't have any experience with watching her weight, so it's all new to her.
Anyway, I'd like to try to help her put a sensible diet together, or at least give her some guidelines. Hopefully her trainer will not be a quack, too. What changes can she expect in the next month or so, if she starts eating a more balanced, but still calorically deficited diet, and adds in weight training. And should she add in cardio right now? She doesn't have a whole lot of weight training experience, and I don't think has even done much cardio in a while.
Any ideas?
