Diet to help a preteen loose some fat

My nephew is 4'5" 12yo and almost 200lbs. Poor kid has bad genes and family doesn't help they stuff him with crap. He asked for my help he doesn't want to go to school next year being fat. I told him I would but he has to come stay at our house so I can monitor what he eats and gives me a good excuse to do the same :) traing will be 1 hr am cardio then go to work with me ( I work in the heat and very physical job) then for some light weight resistance training and another hr of cardio pm.

I used to be a big kid - take my advice and break him in gently. If you hit him too hard with everything at once he will soon hate doing it. First cut out the crap, and slowly change everything else.

Good luck!

Every thing his parents and grandparents feed him is crap so cutting out that will be a drastic change. I did get him and his brother mixed up thou he is actually about to be 14. He is shorter than his 12 yo brother so I confused the ages lol.

Bro those were MY stats at 12 years old!! Didn't lose it till I was 16. Lol!

Ok número uno, going to work with you sounds good but chances are he'll get bored and lose motivation. That's what happened to me trying to do a mans work as a boy. Does he like any sports? If so get him playing, it's amazing the stamina of even the fattest kid if they're doing something they like. I recommend martial arts, fun, good exercise and he'll learn self confidence.

Número um, two (lol) get him eating fruit instead of sweets (candy) and other crap like that, that kids love.

Thirdly, and this is controversial, have you any idea what his blood type is? Part of the reason I was so fat as a kid was because the food I was given, while healthy, wasn't compatible with my blood type, I couldn't digest it well and it was stored around my gut. Since I've been following my blood type recommendations I've been dropping weight steadily and maintaining my muscle mass :)

If you'd like to know more about the blood type diet check out my log.

Diet and exercise. Being young find something he would find fun like basket ball, football, soccer, or just running. If he has access to a gym you can have him lift a few times a week starting off light of course. If not plenty of body weight stuff to do like pushup, pullup, burpees, etc.

Like MrsMuscle said start off slow with diet and light activities. As he starts to get used to exercise and dieting step it up.

It may be hard since he is so young to have a say in food that is cook, but he can avoid anything that comes in a bag or box that's junk like chips and candy.

After that it'll be up to him to stay motivated and keep going.

He likes going to work with me though. He is a black belt In karate, plays football, does wrestling comps. But when he isn't doing these thing he is sitting on his ass playing video games with his dad eating sugary bullshit. No clue on blood type hell I don't even know mine.

In that case bro he just needs to get the fork outa his face! Lol! Cut the crap food and eat less cals overall, even healthy food can make you fat if you eat too much of it!

Most peeps have no clue as to their blood type! I only know mine cos I was in the army!

This going to be a challenge for sure everyone in his family is over weight. They all eat crap, hell his grandma is diabetic instead of changing her diet she said thats what she has meds for. WTF?

My kid was fat at 12 years old but leaned out by:
1. Getting into swimming and being on the swim team.
2. Puberty. Lots of chubby kids lean out when they hit puberty, but at 4'5" and 200lb, its probably going to take more than puberty for your kid.

My son's friend was fatter than he was, and the mother used to worry about his weight and nag him all the time. Then you'd look in her shopping cart and see oreos, chips, ice cream etc. She'd yell at him for eating it but keep it in the house. :(

So yeah you are on the right track. Get him out of his parents house, get him into some kind of sport that he will like, and get him started on healthy eating and exercise habits.

For sports, I was lucky my son was not self conscious about being a chubby kid on the swim team, but you might have trouble getting this kid involved in team sports if he is self conscious. So, you might consider some individual type activities like hiking, bike riding etc. But team sports really work well because they force you into a routine and push you harder than you would on your own.

In that case bro you and he both got a lot of work ahead! I used to know a couple of kids whose parents gave them nothing but take out food and microwave meals and thought letting them sit in paying video games was good cos it kept em out of trouble.

If he can start enjoying fruit instead of sugary snacks it'll go a long way. My brother won't keep sweets in the house so my nephews only have fruit as an option. But then it's easier looking after your own kids!

I reckon if you can help him lose weight not only will he feel more comfortable in a fitter body (clothes will fit better!) he'll also find his karate improves, especially his kicking, it's hard to kick well when you gave a gut getting in the way! :)

I wish you and your nephew all the best bro, please keep us updated with his progress. :)
