Ok, I need some opinions here. I found some straps in my gym today and learned how to use them, and guess what, it was deadlifting day, yay.
Ok so I did , 135x10, 225x6, 275x6, 355x6, I used double overhand for the first 3 lifts, the last I used the straps. Man they are sweet, I'm going to aim for 405x6 before 2007! Well I guess my question is...........
......(sorry my forearms are sore from the deads)...my question is, fuck grip right? If straps means more weight lifted go for it? I've done 355 for 6 just with chalk and alternate grip before, but then the next week I tried 365 and only got 3! Fuck I can't seem to just ask the fucking question. Maybe I do have downs... anyways, comment thanks.

the real issue here, is why the hell are you trying to deadlift with a double over hand grip? use an alternating grip

nothing wrong with straps.. I deadlift, do rack pulls and barbell rows with straps.. Hell, I use straps with almost all my back exercises.. My forarms always get pumped and they arent small. Your grip always gives out first, so i would rather have assistance and get the extra reps that I wouldnt get if my grip gave out first...

Straps reinforce your grip, and you rely less on your hands and forearms, they are a necessity for dead lifts.

Don’t use straps if your are trying to strengthen your grip, or forearms,

But that is not the usual goal of dead lifts.

yeah bro, just focus something at the end for forearms....think--how the fuck are your forearms supposed to support the same amount of weight as your entire back? That will always be the first thing on me to give out...You're only as strong as your weakest link, so if you can mask that weak link, by all means do it!

on deads I only use straps over 300lbs, the lower weight sets I can easily grip.

Back days with the heavy BB rows and DB rows I have to use straps - at least on the heavier sets.

They have their place, but I try not to rely on them.

If you're gym allows it you should try using chalk. Chalk is the ultimate grip enhancer

i use double overhand grip myself, usually sumo style when i go super heavy. I agree with ua iron, don't use them till you are doing VERY heavy weights.

and those aren't bad numbers for deads at your age and weight bro(considering you aren't lying)

Ya man I use chalk, but I still failed with 365x6, and i know i can with straps.

just ditch the straps, use an alternating grip. you will be a lot better off in the long run. with an alternating grip, you can support more weight than your body will be able to handle

i agree man but i missed 365 for 6 and i know i can get it with straps.

Don't use straps until you need to. Let your forearms and hands get stronger on there own, until you need them.

Im in the same boat with most of the bros on the thread. I use straps all the time for heavier weights, just because my hands cant hold that much. Id much rather use straps and be able to do 50+ pounds more per lift, than have to settle for a lighter weight workout. I use straps on deads, shrugs, regular and close grip lat pulls, and sometimes upright rows.

For the record I use a double overhand grip on deads as well.

get a pair of lifting hooks

I use straps myself too..i also like to grab the 120 lbs dumbells strap up and do farmer walks around the gym...you aint felt pain in your traps until youve done some long farmer walks with heavy weight...

I use straps because I don't give a damn about my grip strength. If I can open the microwave door and jerk off, my grip is good.

Man you make some good posts.

i always have done double overhand bc I was told doing the alternate would lead to one side being bigger than the other and certain muscle imbalances. I can pull a shit ton more alternate though. I just use straps anything over 315 with DOH on deads.

wow...what the hell is with everyone and straps...you are going to have pussy forearms and a wussy grip...point blank...your forearm and grip is going to suffer...if you dont care about that then go for it
i have pretty good forearms and bis and never directly work them out...this is an old photo and im not well developed but im just showing you 585 no belt no straps just chalk

alternate hand positions during each set.

I wasn't born with giant meat hooks like you so I use straps on BB rows and deadlifts.

I often train with multiple reps and that is what kills me. I can usually hold my max deadlift weight just with my hands for one rep but if I am doing more than one rep it begins to slide and I can't hold it any longer.

I usually begin using straps on BB rows when I get to 225 and begin on DL's when I get to 365 but I can still hold a single of 495 w/o straps.

dont think you should use straps or ur forearm will fall behind. but thats only if u care about getin a strong grip, but for muscle mass then ofcoarse a strap will aid in lifting heavier weights equaling more muscle gains. but i dont see the reason for you use. im 160lbs and i dealift 320lbs for a few reps perfectly fine without any straps or chalk.

Double over hand grip is safer on the biceps, I used it for many years with straps.

Now I have started to compete in powerlifting i have switched my grip and ditched the straps.

If you have no plans to compete, then I would say stick with the straps.

agree 100%

I shake hands for a living so there is no way in hell I am doing something with a bare grip and fucking up my income. Nasty ass callouses.

word...

all these people who say straps are a 'necessity' need to tell that to benni magnusson or dave tate..

and why the fuck is this in the aas forum

they are a necessity to me bro. When you need to deadlift more weight than your hands can hold i say they are a necessity. I mean some peoples bodyparts are much stronger than others proportionally. My back/hams have always been quite strong and deads are one of my much stronger lifts, its not my fault my forearms and grip strength can't keep up with the strength of my back/legs. Plus when deadlifting 600+ lbs i don't want to worry about my hands slipping or not holding the weight, i just want to concentrate on my positioning and my pull movement, i don't want to be worried about anything else

You peeps laughing about wussy grip strength... just remember when you are in the gym mutilating your epidermis until your hands look like a waterlogged 90 year old Ethiopian man... someone like myself is going to be rubbing your girls tits with her having multiple orgasms with our butter smooth hands. Then when we pull their legs open, that is all the strength we really need.

Continue on with looking like an uneducated field labor worker while we sit around with our manicured hands laughing at the fact that despite our over hypertrophied physiques are much bigger - cause straps = more weight = more muscle - while you guys sit around in your cars at red lights gnawing your callouses off.

lmfao, this thread just gets better and better!

I use straps myself. I had a trainer once that would never let me use them because he wanted my forearms and grip to get stronger. I hated it. I felt so limited because I could lift so much more with straps and felt that I wasnt getting the full benefits of a heavy lift with out them. I went back to straps. I don't want popeye forearms anyhow.

yeah, i feel you drr.. but static holds and increasing grip strength will not only make it easier to deadlift, but it will increase forearm strength, too :)

bro, im not going to knock you man, but i've been training going on 12 years. I know how to lift and i know how to use straps to my advantage.

I got a feeling when you finally do your first real cycle if you ever decide to do it that you will realize the strength gains on your core exercises will be tremendous. When you start getting in the 500's 600's and 700's you might fully understand what im talking about bro.

I find it really difficult to lower my poundages on a core lift like deads just to build a very small muscle like my forearms. and my forearms are already huge, hell i got a pic posted somewhere on elite in teh archives from 2001 you can see teh size of my forearms there.

If i want to increase forearm strenght i'll target forearms with wrist curls or weighted rope roll ups. Im not going to let my entire body suffer on poundages because i can't hold a certain amount of weight comfortably

I can def tell that I need to work a bit on my grip strength... so ive been doing at least warm ups etc etc with just grip no straps... before i just strapped up for everything but the lightest light set.

Im not doing crazy weights by any means, but for instance, last night i did deads... could only get 315x 1 with no straps cuz my grip was slipping as it was... 315x6 with straps ... so obviously my grip needs to get stronger (oh and the rest of me too lol)

agree, i don't use them for lighter weights or weights i can't comfortable handle, but for heavy shrugs and deads they are a must

To you bitches worried about grip strength... please send me pics of your girls. Assuming you have one.

Every time I think i dont need grip strength... ijust think about stallone in that old movie cliffhanger.... then i realize at any point i could find myself holding on to a cliff above a thousand foot drop by only my fingers ... and i know i need that strength!

I think many are missing the point here, would you rather have a large thick wide back and big meety hams with a muscular ass and thick traps? or would you rather have a half inch on your forearms?

i guess i dont look at it the same way, i mean who in their right mind would want to limit their deadlift solely because theydidnt want to use straps?

If I can work on my grip strength with lighter weights that I can handle with no straps... then sweet...

but if I can then add 100+ lbs WITH straps... well thats even sweeter...

Ya who cares about grip strength, really now, does it matter? nope.

i know... my post reads wrong

i was saying i dont see why someone would want to limit their deadlift, so yes we agree.

that is because we are both smart... (but sshhh dont tell anyone)

Everytime I think about that old movie Cliffhanger, I remind myself never to be stupid enough to find myself hanging by my fingers above a thousand foot drop in the first place.

I mean really.... like you are going to head off to work one mornind and unexpectantly find yourself in that predictament.

Lol....Yea you just never know when your gonna find yourself in need af that grip!!

To each his own. If you wanna develop forearms then train forearms. Deadlift is for other muscle group. I don't give a damn rat, I use straps and/or hooks and look better than those gorillas trying to lift 1 ton.

I''ve noticed lately my forearms(middle) have a little patch of broken blood vessels after I deadlift. It was after 355x6 and 315x12, anyone else have this?

I am pretty much assured that you don't hang over cliff drop offs for a living or anything else that requires Hollywood style grip strength.

then you gonna have to always were straps.

what gave out your hand grip or your back and legs from fatigue?

i say drop the weight down to 350 with a raw grip then as your forarms and grip gets greated increase it to 360 then 365 then prob 375.

Btw man I think your full-o-shit pulling 365 for 6 reps. But if you are telling the truth and not yanking our chains more power to ya bro.good work

What if I video it? If i prove it can i get a free plat membership or something?

i'm only 5'8 165lbs and that is actually my 6 rep max 365 WITHOUT straps or chalk. i have ugly ass hands, old thread too I know...

anybody want a vid of me to prove it

A deadlift only counts if you can grab and hold the bar with nothing more than chalk. Any aids like straps and its not a deadlift. Your only as strong as your weakest link, using straps is kinda like doing deadlifts with the plates on boxes, or doing shallow squats.
