back rest/support when doing shoulder presses.....

when doing shoulder presses (i use dumbells, used to use a machine) do you guys use a back support (i.e. have the bench at vertical to straighten your back)

when i do i inevitably slup which means my neck presses against the bench, and this can be good

i tried the preacher bench but the corners of the back rest 'cut' into my back

so is it ok to sit on a bench with no back support? is/are there any stabilisation issues as im using dumbells as opposed to a machine (i never used a back rest on machine but then i knew the machine wasnt going anywhere :) )....

any help or thoughts would be much appreciated as always :)

When doing seated shoulder presses without back support it can be very tough on your lower back because of stability and compression on it...

Use a bench and keep your lumbar area pressed against it, i.e. don't arch your back. Otherwise you're putting quite a bit of stress on your lower back.

When I do mil. presses, my back is always flush against the bench. The bench though, is not perfectly straight up. I set it at about an 80-85 degree angle so I'm leaning back just enough for stability, but not so much that it becomes a chest excercise.
