A few random questions. Also need some suggestions. (food related)

And i got to thinking, is it really necessary to count calories? if i was low enough of carbohydrate wouldnt fat be the next alternate fuel source for your body? So i think if i had enough carbohydrate to workout and have energy wouldnt i lose fat?

Anyways thats how i always thought of diets. But i do understand that calories in/out.

So the question of the day would be..

What is better for weight loss.
A 40/30/30 2,000 calorie diet OR
A tweaked version of Atkins?

From everything ive learned in school though, atkins is technically safe for no more then 3 weeks. Your triglycerides would skyrocket. But im not talking about 20g or less like the induction phase of atkins. I was thinking <50

Fitday takes awhile the first week. See you go to the grocery store every week and pretty much always get the same stuff. Once you save everything in it 1 time as a custom food... you are good to go. I spend 5 minutes at work doing my fitday every day... it's SO EASY once everything is in there. I put in my post workout shake, my before bed anpb, my pre-workout mini shake, my breakfast and then work around it to achieve whatever my goal is for the day in consumed calories... usually fit in a pound of lean raw meat, a fat serving (almonds, olive oil, anpb), and on top of the pre-post workout carbs, about another 50 or so which usually comes from oatmeal or brown rice.

Fitday is incredibly easy after that initial stage passes... BUT... there's something to be said for taking your time. As you get accustomed to the new lifestyle, and want to see more and better progress.. you will naturally be willing to add a little sacrafice or change here and there to make that happen.

1. Sugar (and the excess insulin released by your body when you eat it) is the REAL cause of obesity in this country, NOT fat. Bad fats are not helpful, but nowadays, more seemingly health-conscious people are gaining weight by consuming the PROPER # of calories a day by eating LOWFAT, FAT FREE items like Snackwell cookies... fat free chips... high fiber popcorn... salads in "fat free (high sugar)" dressing... fruit... veggies.

ALL CARBS.

2. Atkins is a money-sucking  The man is dead. Don't listen to his advice anymore. :D

Honestly, if you want a "book-popular" approach, go with South Beach. However, SBD focusses on the same things I just told you: 40/30/30, less processed food, watch out for hidden SUGAR, etc.

3. Anything you lose according to the scale in the first 2 weeks is WATER weight, male or female. I have been 165# and am now down to 158#. Big deal you say?

I was a size 12 at 165# back last July... and I'm a size 7 now at 159#. Just a little muscle goes a long way (or 15-20# of it put on by a shootload of training and PROTEIN).

For rizzle, I should write a book. :qt:

Well I have had nutrition and AP in college, i know for a fact atkins works and from experience. Im not buying his crap lol, so its not money making from me... But i do think the 40/30/30 is the better route, but id imagine it would take longer to lose weight.

So hmm.. use fitday again. I guess I could bite the bullet. :P

Atta boy. :qt:

By the way, I have two bachelors degrees: one in Biological Sciences with a minor in chemistry... and one in human biology.

Not only do I KNOW the curriculum you've been through -- I now teach it. I teach 7th and 8th graders now but I taught chemistry, physics and anatomy last year in an urban ART high school. So hey -- this is my gift. :) I did my homework, and now I get to assign it!

Haha sweet. I love bio sciences. I want to keep learning. Im finding foods at fitday and adding them.. i guess i can post this crap when im done for you to rip into me. :D <3

It's not that Atkins doesn't work. IT DOES. When I was 18 I went from 285+++ to an unhealthy low of 174 before settling in at the low 190's.

The thing is changing your body composition involves athletics and weight training, and those athletics and weight training sessions require fuel going INTO the session, and fuel to grow and recuperate after the session.

And that's why no-carb is usually a bad idea for a beginner or someone doing a "lifestyle change" cut (unless you're dialing in for a show, even then, you know that the look you're achieving is goaled on one day, not permanent).

Your body needs clean whole foods and veggies and fruit and a balance of all kinds (fats, carbs and protein), especially on a cut. Mayo and bacon, etc. have their place, but not daily while you're trying to lose bodyfat while retaining/gaining lean body mass.

That, at least, has been my experience.

Just keep adding things as custom foods using the nutrition labels, from out of your cubboard and fridge.

And eventually, when you really get into it... get a digital food scale, like the one I got from a brand called Salter. It's a huge help and if I put in the nutritional values of a food, it will tell me exactly how many cals and what kinds of cals I am eating when I put the food on the scale. Very cool.

Thas to be pretty close to what I had maybe?
